Sometimes we're tempted to ask the question when someone goes back to their old ways shortly after "repenting" - "Did they really repent in the first place?" This is an unwise practice that places us in the place of God.

Peter is a great case study to learn that genuine repentance does not always lead to immediately sustained change in behavior. In Acts 10:9-16, God had to tell Peter THREE times that Gentiles were just as clean as Jews since Christ died on the cross! Peter then went to preach to Cornelius. But THEN, Peter was later caught showing partiality against Gentiles in Galatians 2! Did Peter not really repent of his prejudice and partiality in Acts 10? No. He repented. Peter just proves that repentance sometimes is short lasting and it takes time to realize sustained behavior change.

It's best to assume that a person who goes back to their old habits genuinely repented but simply reverted to their old ways. Otherwise we are judging the person's hidden motives, something only God knows (Jeremiah 17:10).

For everyone out there who is in the heat of the battle with sin, especially the sin cycle of repeated sin - this is one of my favorite quotes. If you're in the battle, it means you're fighting. It's when you don't feel the heat anymore that you're either victorious or consumed.

"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places." (Ephesians 6:10-12)

POLL: What is "real" repentance?

There are different points of view about what "real" repentance is. Let me know what you think true repentance is by reacting to this post using the guide below. If are willing, please explain from scripture why you believe what you believe.

Like = Repentance is simply being sorry for your sins.

Love = Repentance is simply a change of mind.

Care = Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change in behavior, regardless how long that change may last.

Laugh = Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change in behavior that is sustained (long lived). If the change doesn't stick, then there was no real repentance.

Man is unmistakably saved by grace and grace alone. Grace is the only BASIS of salvation. But there are CONDITIONS.

If there are no conditions to grace, then universalism (everyone is saved) is true.

If you are not choosing on your own to place faith in Jesus, then there is no free will really involved, and Calvinism is true (look up the doctrine of Irresistible Grace).

When you choose, of your own free will, to place faith in Jesus, you are doing something, but it is something God commanded of you as a condition to His grace (John 6:28-29).

And don't be afraid by the label "living faith." Living is the opposite of dead. Faith is something we do - exercise, choose, etc. "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also" (James 2:26).

Unless you are a Universalist or Calvinist, we all believe you have to "do" something to be saved (Acts 16:30).

This slideshow is NOT an exhaustive study of Job's sins. There are likely even more false, sinful statements that Job makes throughout the book, but these are undeniable, especially when taken together.

What are we to think of Job then?

First, he wasn't perfect. Job at least demonstrates to us that living by faith doesn't mean living absolutely sinlessly.

Second, he was willing to humble himself and repent. Job demonstrates that faithfulness necessitates the ability to be humbled and repent.

Third, he never forsook God. He was angry at God and sinned by saying things about God that were unjust and unrighteous, but he never forsook God. He never denied God existed. He was never willing to curse God and forsake him, despite his wife's advice.

Even in our worst moments, don't forsake God. Confess to him how you really feel, stay in communication with Him through prayer and searching the scriptures, heed the counsel of WISE friends not fools, and being willing to humble yourself and repent when faced with the truth of God's awesome power and glory.

In Job 4, his excuse of a friend named Eliphaz tells Job that only the wicked suffer (v. 7). Then, in order to strengthen his message and make it more convincing to Job, he claims to have experienced a vision in the night, seen a spirit, and heard a voice.

Eliphaz claims a spiritual vision confirming a wrong message... Ever heard of that before? Ever heard someone say they heard God tell them this or that, and what they heard only confirmed what they already wanted to believe and think?

Eliphaz confirms that it's healthy and good to be skeptical when people claim to have heard a small still voice speaking to them. It's not being faithless; it's being discerning and wise.

Let's suppose Eliphaz really did see a spirit in a vision. If so, it also goes to show that not every spirit is from God. There is plenty evidence in scripture of deceiving spirits.

Just because something is "spiritual" doesn't mean it's good.
