🎉 Congratulations to Rebecca Hammons of Nicholas County SPOKES!
When Rebecca enrolled in the SPOKES program in April 2025, she had very little experience using computers or Microsoft Office programs and was unsure of her abilities in a classroom setting. Instead of letting those doubts hold her back, she embraced the challenge with determination, patience, and a willingness to learn.

As a wife and mother of two, Rebecca balanced family responsibilities while consistently working toward her educational goals. Through regular attendance, active participation, and steady effort, she transformed unfamiliar tasks into new strengths.

Her accomplishments are remarkable. Rebecca earned numerous certifications, including Microsoft Office Specialist certifications in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and completed the Microsoft Office 2019 Specialist Associate credential. She also earned a Gold Career Readiness Certificate through ACT WorkKeys, along with several other workforce and industry credentials.

Rebecca's success extends beyond her own achievements. She encourages classmates, assists others with coursework, and even helped fellow students prepare for job interviews. Her journey demonstrates the power of perseverance, lifelong learning, and believing in yourself. 🌟

The WV Adult Education programs build skills for success by providing adults with the opportunity to acquire and improve functional skills necessary to enhance the quality of their lives as workers, family members, and citizens.

Our students had a special visitor this week. Senator Shelley Moore Capito stopped by Nicholas County SPOKES and the Family Learning Center to see our classroom and hear directly from the adult learners working toward their next step. Thank you, Senator, for giving your time to our students and for letting them tell their own story. Moments like this remind our learners that their hard work is seen and their voices matter.

The West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS), Bureau for Family Assistance (BFA), has received federal approval to provide Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (Summer EBT) for the 2026 summer period. This program assists eligible households in purchasing groceries during the summer months when school meals are unavailable.

The 2026 Summer EBT program will run from June 1, 2026, through August 20, 2026, and will provide a one-time grocery benefit. To receive benefits during the initial issuance, households should submit a completed application by May 15, 2026. Applications will continue to be accepted through August 20, 2026, and will be processed within 15 business days after receipt.

Applications can be obtained at local DoHS county offices, through the Office of Constituent Services, or downloaded at bfa.wv.gov/summer-ebt. Applications will be available in paper format only and may be submitted in person, by mail, email, or fax.

Eligibility and Benefits:

Benefits will be issued as a one-time payment, either added to an existing SNAP or WV WORKS EBT card or provided on a new Mountain State EBT card.

Most eligible students will be automatically enrolled through the PATH system if they:

-Receive SNAP, WV WORKS, or qualifying Medicaid
-Are in foster care
-Are identified as homeless, migrant, or runaway
-Are enrolled in WV Head Start

These households do not need to apply and can expect to receive benefits beginning the week of May 25, 2026.

Households not automatically enrolled, including those with students attending Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) schools, must apply to determine eligibility.

We are so incredibly proud to announce that one of our amazing SPOKES students, **Dezarae C.**, has officially passed her learner’s permit driving test! 🥳✨
Dezarae has been working hard, and seeing that dedication pay off is what SPOKES is all about. Passing the permit test is a huge step toward independence, and we know she’s already looking ahead to the finish line.
Next stop: **The Driver’s License Test!** 🚦

🎉Join us in a massive congratulations to our Nicholas County SPOKES student, Rebecca H.!

Rebecca has been putting in the hard work, and it absolutely paid off. Not only did she officially earn her Ready to Work Certification this week, but she also secured a new job at the exact same time.! 💼🙌

Balancing classes, skill-building, and a job hunt take serious dedication. We are incredibly proud of her perseverance and the work ethic she brings to both the classroom and the workplace.
