A Summer of Opportunity: Nicholas County Students Learn, Grow, and Thrive

Road tripping, camping, flying off to space, traveling on vacation, and learning life skills… The kids taking part in Nicholas County Schools’ summer programming were bustling with activity! Nicholas County Schools offered the SummerBoost program at four schools this year (BRE, CRE, GRE, and SES) along with mobile educational and feeding opportunities with “Velma” the RV! These enrichment programs allowed the children in Nicholas County the opportunity to enhance their learning skills, stay active, be fed, and see sites around the county and state. These programs are funded by Save the Children, Century 21, and Title I funds.

The numbers don’t lie: Over 150 students were involved in SummerBoost and over 210 students participated in “Road Trippin’ with “Velma” the RV”. More than 5,500 meals were served, 20 hours of math instruction, 20 hours of literacy instruction, and 20 hours of physical fitness and nutrition instruction were given along with 35 field trips were taken.

Our summer programs were a testament to the power of inclusion, community, and opportunity. By centering our efforts on students and their families, we created a nurturing environment that fostered growth, learning, and success. The positive impact of these programs will be felt long after the summer has ended, as our children carry forward the skills and connections they have gained.
