The Director of the Luzerne County Department of Emergency Services was out in the community Friday night for Forty Fort National Night Out!

It was a great evening bringing together residents, first responders, local organizations and community partners for a night of fun and community connection.

If you can keep your cool when things get busy, handle more than one thing at a time, and like work where no two shifts are quite the same, this may be worth a look.

911 Telecommunicators work behind the scenes every day, answering calls, gathering information, and helping get police, fire, and EMS where they need to go.

No public safety communications experience? That’s okay. Training is provided.

This is a 24/7 operation, so the job does include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime when needed.

🎉 Congratulations to Chris Halecki and Brian Black!

The Luzerne County Department of Emergency Services is proud to recognize Chris Halecki, Training & Protocols Supervisor, and Brian Black, Training & Quality Assurance Coordinator, on earning Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) certifications.

Chris earned his Municipal Associate and Practitioner Associate certifications, while Brian earned his County Staff Associate and Practitioner Associate certifications.

Their certificates were presented by Dave Elmore, Deputy Director of Emergency Services – Emergency Management Agency, and County Manager Romilda Crocamo.

Congratulations to both Chris and Brian on this well-deserved achievement. Your commitment to professional development strengthens our organization and the service we provide to the residents of Luzerne County. 👏

This is a fast-paced public safety position for people who can listen carefully, communicate clearly, manage several things at once, and keep learning.

Previous 911 experience is not required. Training is provided.

We'd like to send a big thank you to Chelsea Bresnahan for stopping by the Luzerne County 911 Center today, and to Congressman Rob Bresnahan Jr. and Chelsea Bresnahan for treating our staff to lunch.

Chelsea shared that she and Rob are regular scanner listeners, something that started during her years as a news reporter. After the weekend our team just had, hearing her describe our telecommunicators as "the steady voice behind every call" was something our staff truly appreciated.

During her visit, Chelsea took the time to talk with our telecommunicators, ask questions, and get a better understanding of everything that goes into a 911 call. It was great to see someone take such a genuine interest in the work our team does every day.

Thank you, Rob and Chelsea, for your thoughtful gesture and for taking the time to recognize the incredible team that serves Luzerne County every day. Our staff truly appreciated it.

Rob and Chelsea, we hope you'll both stop by again sometime. The door is always open, and we're always happy to share a little more about what happens behind the scenes at Luzerne County 911.

🇺🇸 As we head into Independence Day weekend, everyone at the Luzerne County Department of Emergency Services wishes you and your family a safe and enjoyable holiday! 🇺🇸

The Fourth of July weekend is routinely one of the busiest times of the year for Luzerne County 911, especially as communities across the county celebrate with fireworks.

As you celebrate, please keep these reminders in mind:

🎆 Call 911 only for emergencies. Reserving 911 for true emergencies helps keep the system available for those who need immediate police, fire, or EMS assistance.

📞 If you call 911, please stay on the line until a telecommunicator answers. If you hang up before speaking with us, your call is treated as an abandoned 911 call that must be handled. Calling back again creates another 911 call, which may actually increase the time it takes for you to reach a telecommunicator.

📍 Know your location. Whether you’re at home, visiting family, or enjoying a fireworks display, be prepared to provide your exact location if you need emergency assistance.

💧 Stay cool and stay hydrated. Hot temperatures are expected throughout the holiday weekend. Drink plenty of water, take breaks in the shade or air conditioning when possible, and check on family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who may be more vulnerable to the heat.

🐾 Don’t forget your pets. Fireworks and hot weather can be stressful for animals. Keep pets indoors during fireworks whenever possible, make sure they have access to plenty of fresh water, and ensure collars and identification tags are up to date in case they become frightened and get loose.

🎇 Celebrate safely. Follow local laws, supervise children around fireworks, never handle fireworks while impaired, and keep a safe distance from fireworks displays.
