What if we responded to children the way a GPS responds to a wrong turn?

When Marty Appelbaum makes the wrong turn on the way to a training, his GPS doesn’t get angry. It doesn’t yell. It simply reroutes him and helps him find a better path.

Children take wrong turns too. They make mistakes. They make poor choices. They sometimes know what to do and still don’t do it.

Sometimes our most powerful response is simply to reroute. Show them what they can do differently. Guide them back on track. Give them another chance to make a better choice.

Children don’t need us to keep reminding them that they took a wrong turn. They need us to help them find the way forward.

When a young child gets angry, they don’t have a clue what to do with all that anger and they may explode.🤯💣💥

Marty Appelbaum teaches them a cute chant to say that acknowledges their anger and teaches them not to act out when they’re angry.

What makes it so effective, is that the children start by fanning their faces with an invisible fan.🪭
That gross motor sensory activity actually starts cooling down a child who’s angry.
