4. ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿฟโœ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฟโœ‹๐Ÿฟ. P.S. Notice that โ€œ Cheatโ€ and โ€œSheetโ€ sound the same and learn why they are spelled differently! Proper literacy instruction will teach you this. Teach/Speech.

You donโ€™t need to memorize spelling words. Cross word puzzles and many typical worksheets are missing out on important morphology and proper spelling instruction.

5. Expertise matters.

Educators around the ๐ŸŒŽ globe need to learn a lot more about the science of reading ! No one is going to learn everything they need about literacy just from college or work. Teachers that invest in lifelong learning are light years ahead of those expecting to learn everything at college or at work. Literacy is just the tip of the iceberg. We must focus on the science of learning for reading, writing, spelling, math and all learning. Itโ€™s impossible to ignore the science of how the brain learns. The โ€œ decade of the brain โ€œ was long ago. Our schools need to โ€œ catch upโ€ as the internet is a vast universe of knowledge.

Train the brain to learn more. What you fire is what you wire. Stay curious. Keep learning. Donโ€™t let union rules get in the way of your own knowledge base.

6. Beyond reading.

Hello schools. You can no longer ignore a percentage of students as if they only โ€œ belong to the special education teacher .โ€ Everyone matters. That includes the 1 in 5 students with learning differences.

Are you a homeschool mom or have a preschooler at home? Click the link for a free printable that shows how to segment words.

If we want to raise readers, we must teach the alphabet code in a systematic sequence that explicitly teaches skills such as blending, segmenting, and manipulation so that students learn how to build words, pull words apart, and blend to read.

It is easier for children to decode words if we show them how speech sounds and graphemes link.

In the beginning, keeping those eyes on print is tricky. Talking about pictures or first sounds doesn't teach the skills needed for reading. They only promote guessing, which is not a strategy needed for decoding.

Talking about pictures does have a place when reading picture books together, as this will develop vocabulary, curiosity and imagination.

Effective teaching puts students on the right track and helps teachers see who needs intervention.

Most children need instruction.

Children need to learn how letters and sounds link. They also need help to work out the different spellings that go with sounds to read words. Learning how to read, spell and write are skills that need explicit, systematic instruction. Only that will catch most so they don't fall through the net.

But we can catch a love of stories and a love of books from parents, teachers and librarians. A home full of books and trips to the library can enrich the environment and foster a love of learning, but more is needed to keep a student from struggling.

Read my blog post about why we should be tipping the scales towards explicit instruction and decoding in Foundation.

As many of you know, our family made a move last fall. I was a Dyslexia Therapist in a public school before the move and decided to offer private dyslexia therapy from home once we got settled. This is a huge shift, a new beginning, a fresh start, and Iโ€™m excited to be on this journey! From Zoom to in-person sessions, Iโ€™m thrilled to be back to doing what I love.
