In Appalachia (and everywhere, truly) Black communities, the places we steward, and our institutions are treasures.

When we own places and institutions, it’s a step towards building a legacy for our people now and for generations to come.

Our field office is our step towards strengthening our work for the communities we serve now and in the future. It’s a place for meeting, research, and more— Black rural place and power!

Black in Appalachia have been renting our info shop and field office for a year when we were given an opportunity to own it--- and we took it! The place has meant alot to our staff for operational and logistic needs but also, our office is in rural East Tennessee for meaningful reasons--

1) its central to the communities we serve and work within….
2) its central to where we come from….and
3) we usually have to work from urban and industrialized places, which leaves a gap in current Black rural spaces existing.

There’s no doubt that Black institutions, places, and secured buildings are beloved by Appalachia. As one of our researchers shares “...it's huge!”. Why? There's a landscape of white ownership and attempted cloaking of Black communities. Our institutions shine as a model for reclamation and visibility of what our region truly represents-- multicultural and Black place! This is why we took the chance to be another base for our folk + for the current, past,and future of Appalachia.

This chance came with a bill… while we continue to work to serve our folk and mission. We believe that our supporters will help us w**d through this operational cost to focus on the cultural and place-based movement we are part of.
