New Publication Alert! Dr. Mark Estienne and Dr. Sally Paulson have released a new Virginia Cooperative Extension publication titled, "Protecting Virginia Pigs Raised Outdoors from Biting Insects and Arachnids."

Please join us in congratulating C. Brandt Tate on the successful defense of his Ph.D. dissertation, “Nitrogen Management in Cotton: Evaluating Early-Season Fertility Practices and Developing an NDVI-Based Nitrogen Recommendation Algorithm for the Southeastern Virginia Coastal Plain,” at Tidewater AREC on September 21.

After many long days in the field and countless hours of research, analysis, and writing, Brandt has achieved this remarkable milestone under the guidance of his advisor and committee chair, Hunter Frame, and committee members Abhilash Chandel, Matthew Eick, Feng Guo, Julie Shortridge, and Ryan Stewart.

Brandt will be greatly missed as he moves on from Tidewater AREC. He plans to continue his work in agriculture, focusing on GIS and precision agriculture to help farmers make informed, data-driven decisions that improve crop production and make more efficient use of resources.

ATTENTION PEANUT FARMERS:
Join local extension agents and our Peanut Variety and Quality Evaluation (PVQE) Specialist Jacob Forehand for a Peanut Pod Blasting Clinic on Monday, September 14, 2026 from 8:00am-11:00am at the Tidewater Agricultural Research & Extension Center.

Bring your peanut samples and we will pod blast them to help determine the best time to harvest your crop. Feel free to bring multiple samples to represent your different field locations.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting a group of Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and Soil and Water Conservation District staff from across the state!

Our faculty and Extension specialists led field tours, sharing insights into cover crops, soybeans, peanuts, entomology, and plant pathology— giving visitors a close look at the research happening at Tidewater AREC. We appreciate everyone who joined us and the continued collaboration that strengthens conservation and sustainable agriculture across Virginia.
