If I had a dollar for every time someone said "Wow, it must be nice to have summers off", I'd be a rich woman. It's usually said in jest, but with the slightest inference that I must have it easy. That they obviously work harder, and longer, for their money. But here's the deal.

For 186 days, I left this precious baby and his brother in the hands of someone else to go enrich the hearts and minds of 30 others. For 186 days I went into battle with a harder demographic than most people will ever know. This past year was especially rough. There were more broken homes and broken hearts in my class than I have ever seen. Most days I felt glad to get out alive, and I wondered if I could do it for another day. I lost my patience more than I care to admit. But I also loved more than I thought I could. I spent 186 nights on my couch planning out how to differentiate my instruction to meet the vast needs of every student in my class.

So yes, it is nice to have summers off! I'm going to spend the next two months doing nothing but soaking this little guy in. This is my last summer ever having a "baby". The last summer of pudgy legs still figuring out how to walk. Of that "new baby" smell. Of those tiny fingers wrapped around mine.

And no, I'm not going to think about work. I'm not going to scour Pinterest for another classroom project. I'm not going to go in and organize my messy cabinets. I'm not going to feel guilty about it; because you know what my students need more than fancy labels? A well rested teacher. A teacher that has taken the time to fill up her tank.

With that said, I'm headed back to the water table with this little cutie!
