Learning from failures and listening to the noise. A few nights ago we headed out in search of greater bat diversity. We regularly conduct Ohio Acoustic Bat Transects for several routes, but I was looking for more bats and more diverse bats. Using NABat Protocols but creating our own (not a GRTS Cell), we ran the route in this map and found almost exclusively Big Brown Bats... the most common bat in Ohio. Though happy to see them, this was not what I was looking for. However, I had be sensing that the realtime triggering had been struggling with IDing calls particularly with the late summer insect noise. As a result rather than discarding "noise," I set the software to keep noise files for later analysis. Using the desktop software the next morning, we found that two-thirds of these IDs (and good ones) came for the noise files when more time to process a call, and with a greater degree of insect and other noise filters can be applied. Lesson learned - I will always save the noise files.
