I worked with Sam Draper- we shared an office- when he originally set up the Honors Program back in the late 1960's and I saw his commitment, talent and passion. He would be so pleased to see his dream so completely fulfilled and yet on-going too, today.

The Sam Draper Honors Program is nationally recognized for offering unique educational experiences, a community of faculty and students, thriving campus life, and successful transfer opportunities to outstanding institutions.

The Sam Draper Honors Program at Rockland Community College is nationally recognized for offering highly advanced academic pursuits and for preparing students to transfer successfully to Ivy League and other outstanding four-year colleges.

Attention all college students! This semester, four RCC students are a part of the “Rockland User Testing Center.”Their job throughout the semester is to talk to students to learn more about their experiences using online class materials. They are currently looking for students (from different colleges/universities) who are willing to raise their hand for interviews! Throughout the semester, there will be multiple opportunities to participate either in-person or through Zoom (and you will be given a $25 Visa gift card to say thanks each time). Each session will be a way to help other students by giving feedback and sharing your experiences.

Meet Marco! Marco is a second-year student in the Sam Draper Honors Program!

1) Why did you become an Honors student?

A: Some of my high school teachers and students encouraged me to join the program because they know that my academic achievements and talents would make me a great fit. I know the program is great and has helped so many students transfer to great four-year colleges. I loved that I get to have a personal advisor to help me with registration for classes, discuss about my academic progress, and check in on me to see if I’m doing okay.

2) What are you looking forward to next semester?

A: I look forward to continuing getting involved in college events happening on campus. I will be more focused on doing well in all my classes so that I can have a great GPA for transferring. I’m also excited to continue hanging out with my friends on campus and possibly continue making new friends.

3) What clubs/activities are you involved in?

A: I’m involved in the Marketing Club, Honors Newsletter, the President’s Society, Gardening Club, Christian Fellowship, SAB, Habitat for Humanity, Campus Players, and Entrepreneurs Club. Whenever there are events happening on campus, I usually attend them because I love getting involved.

4) What is your favorite memory as an Honors student?

A: My favorite memory as an Honors student is when the college had its Fall Fest because it was really nice to see so many students on campus. I enjoyed the music that was playing throughout the event, ate some great food, and I got to hangout with some of my friends from the program.

Sam Draper and His Legacy

Dr. Sam Draper started his career at Rockland Community College as an English professor. In addition to teaching at RCC, Dr. Draper had a passion for Chow dogs. As a co-owner of a top-winning American Kennel Club Chow and later as an American Kennel Club judge, Dr. Draper traveled the country. Dr. Draper’s extensive travels allowed him to visit colleges across the U.S. to see what competitive institutions looked for in prospective transfer students. Dr. Draper gathered information from numerous institutions and created the Rockland Community College Honors Program to educate and mentor students.

Today, the Honors Program is recognized for offering unique educational experiences. There is a diverse community of faculty and students, a thriving campus life, and successful transfer opportunities to outstanding four-year colleges around the world. The Honors Program offers three different tracks: Business, Humanities and Social Science, and Math and Science. Students are paired with passionate faculty mentors based on their academic interests, and take Honors courses in subjects they are interested in.

In addition to small classes with amazing professors, the Honors Program has incorporated an applied learning experience into each degree track that students follow. Students can pick from these various experiences; a study abroad at Cambridge University, independent research with a faculty mentor, and an internship.
