UPDATE 03/20/21: Bob Davis (SBHS Class of 1970) left us on the afternoon of Sunday, March, 20, 2022, at the Lippold Hospice Suite at the Sturgis Hospital. Bob has recently been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. He was able to enjoy and appreciate being named “Main Street Business Man of the Decades” and watching live video of the crowd that turned out on March 15, 2022, for the proclamation of “Bob Davis Day” by Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen.

At the time of his departure, Bob was surrounded by the love of family and friends, both in person and in spirit, from near and far. Arrangements are pending. I hope that they have Segway scooters and drones and motorcycles in Heaven. And remember: If you - as Bob always did - are supporting our town, helping someone out, cracking people up, honoring our people and traditions, investing in Sturgis and Meade County, reveling in our beautiful scenery, making people feel valued, or generally being simultaneously irreverent and respectful, then

Jane Louise Daniels, 52 of Spearfish, SD left this life on January 29, 2022 at the Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, after a long illness. Jane was born December 4, 1969 in Rapid City, South Dakota to Joe and Darlene Daniels. She attended grade school in Jordan, Minnesota

Scooper Nation, the Class of '83 has recently lost Neil Musilek, who was living in Wyoming. His younger sister, Laura Gehner, has shared his obituary (below) with details of a planned remembrance gathering. The comments contain a link to the online guestbook through the funeral home. Neil and I knew each other in junior high and high school, two grades apart. We weren't in the same clubs or sports, but, it's Sturgis, so you know everybody. Years later, we had become "friends" on Facebook. I was living in rural Nevada, and my marriage got really rocky at about the same time as I was laid off from work. Neil reached out, and offered to bring me home to South Dakota, if that was best. I hadn't actually talked in person to the guy for literally decades, and he was totally willing to drive across three states to fetch me, my kid, my animals, and my stuff back to safety, if that's what I needed. Just because we were fellow Scoopers, and just because I needed help. (Probably should have taken that offer!). It's possible that there wasn't a nicer guy this side of the Missouri River. Eugene "Gene" Huckins (SBHS Class of '92) has passed away. Gene was a champion athlete from Sturgis, and made his home there. As a coach, he helped many youth athletes (and their parents) achieve more than they ever imagined. Please visit the Kinkade's website and leave Gene's family a memory or two. Deborah Lee “Debbie” Blakeman, 68, dually residing in Sturgis, SD, and Apache Junction, AZ, journeyed to be with the Lord, her brothers, and her parents on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at Rapid City Regional Hospital with her immediate family and siblings by her side.
She was born, November 24, 1949, in Ipswich, SD, to Eugene and Tillie (Stoecker) Heupel. Debbie graduated from Lead High School in 1968; she continued her education in business and graduated from Black Hills State College in 1975.
Debbie was married to Jim Blakeman July 6, 1979, in Deadwood, SD. Debbie enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, four-wheeling in the Black Hills, crocheting, and reading and socializing with her friends in SD and AZ.
Survivors include her husband, Jim of Sturgis; daughter, Michelle of Mesa, AZ; son, Jesse (Jenna) of Sturgis; three granddaughters, Sydnee of Mesa, and Braylee and Bryar of Sturgis; brothers, Marlo (Debbie) Heupel of Lead, SD, and Kevin Heupel of Alliance, NE; sister, Melodie (Mark) Carney of Ponca City, OK; and numerous extended family members.
Debbie was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Dennis & Lennie.
Visitation will be Sunday, November 11, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be 4:00 p.m. Monday, November 12, 2018, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel with Pastor Kris Garlick officiating. Inurnment will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 16, at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Chris Robert “Bob” Mechling (Brigadier General, US Army, Ret.), 86, Sturgis, passed away unexpectedly on September 28, 2018.
Chris was born to Charles Mechling and Mary Jensen on March 3, 1932, in Faith. The family lived in Sturgis from 1938-1941, moved to California to work in the shipyards during WWII, and finally back to Sturgis in 1947. After graduating from Sturgis High School, Chris served in the Korean War from 1950-1952. After the war, he attended Black Hills State College earning a BS Ed in 1955.
Chris taught school and coached both at Buffalo and Sturgis for several years prior to accepting a full-time position with the South Dakota National Guard. He spent 45 years in the army uniform working his way to the ultimate rank of Brigadier General. Chris was a proud military man through and through.
As a lifetime resident of Sturgis, Chris practiced a strong civic duty. He sat on many boards: Park, Library, School, Water, Industrial Development; as well as serving 6 years as the Mayor of Sturgis. He was a club member: Lions, Elks, and Kiwanis. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the National Guard Association of the U.S., the Retired Officers Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the Boulder Canyon Country Club, and the Grace Lutheran Church. He will miss Sturgis and Sturgis will miss him.
Chris married Ruth Thompson in 1953. They raised 5 children: Mark, Kelly Magdanz (Thomas), Todd (Michelle), Kris Little (Rick), and Shawn. He loved his 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is survived by the above and his brother, Paul.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, John (Bill) and James.
Viewing and visitation will be held at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis on Wednesday, October 3, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, October 4, 2018, at Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis with Pastor Kris Garlick officiating. Burial, with military honors, will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
Memorials have been established to the American Cancer Society and to Grace Lutheran Church.

Amanda Sue Heaton, 48, Spearfish, died Tuesday, September 25, 2018, in Spearfish.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2018 at the Countryside Church in Spearfish. Burial follows at the Whitewood Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Amanda Sue Lemoine was born September 19, 1970 in Baton Rouge, LA.

She moved with her family to Newcastle, WY in 1986 and graduated from Newcastle High School in 1988.

She attended college at the University of Wyoming.

Amanda began working for First Western Bank in September 1997 and had been a loyal employee for 21 years, most recently working as the Teller Hub Manager for the South Dakota market of First Interstate Bank. She will be dearly missed by her First Interstate Family.

Amanda enjoyed camping, ATV riding, dart league and pool league and made many friends over the years. Her infectious laugh and smile will be missed by all who knew her.

She leaves behind her husband, Tracey L. This Thursday, October 19, at Woodle Field, Sturgis Scooper Football hosts Hot Springs at the last home game of the season. It is also Senior Night. At 6:25, Scooper Seniors and their parents will be recognized from Football, Cross Country, Boys Golf, Cheer, Boys & Girls Soccer. Kickoff is at 7:00.

Friday evening, October 20, at Sturgis Brown High School West Gym is Senior Night for Varsity Volleyball players and their parents. The evening begins at 5:00. JV, C, and Varsity teams all play versus St. Thomas More.
