She stopped second-guessing every math answer. That is the sentence every parent of a 9th grader who is quietly slipping in math is waiting to hear.

Isabella was in 9th grade with average math grades and a widening gap in pre-algebra foundations. Her mom noticed homework taking longer and tension building at the kitchen table, so she reached out to A+ Tutoring. Twice a week, Isabella worked with tutor Gianna on slope-intercept form, inequalities, angles, the Pythagorean theorem, and a full transformations unit. Confidence came first. Title I oversight is moving from the U.S. Department of Education to the Department of Labor, and California families should know what that means.

California educates more students in poverty than any other state, and roughly $2.3 billion in Title I funding flows into our districts and charter schools every year. That money supports early literacy, tutoring, English learner services, and after-school programs your kids may already rely on.

He looked at his work, decided he wasn't sure, and tried it again on his own. For a cautious 6th grader whose dad had watched him hesitate instead of guessing for months, that quiet second look was the moment everything shifted.

Ethan is a 6th grader at a Northern California charter school who used to wait when a reading passage looked long, or a math problem had more than one step. After a school meeting about reading support, his father reached out to A+ Tutoring with a quiet brief: find someone Ethan will actually open up to. A 9th grader who used to fail math is now doing it on her own. Her mom pointed to the silence at the kitchen table as the moment she knew tutoring had worked.

Amelia had been quietly falling behind in pre-algebra since well before high school. F's, D's, and the occasional C. Her mom, Yolanda, helped where she could, but the math had moved past what a parent could reasonably step in on. When their charter school opened up A+ Tutoring, Yolanda signed her up. Tutor Angela Salyer rebuilt the foundations session by session: place value, decimals, fractions, equations, inequalities, square roots, the Pythagorean theorem. By spring, Amelia's grades had climbed to a B, and she had stopped asking her mom for homework help entirely.

Middle school reading recovery has stalled, and the students who need help most are falling further behind.

That is the takeaway from NWEA's latest policy report. Today's 8th graders would need nearly a full year of extra instruction to catch up to pre-pandemic reading levels. Only 30% of them read at NAEP Proficient.

For California families and schools, this matters. Our middle schoolers are the ones carrying this gap into high school, and the interventions built for younger readers are not reaching them.
