Exploring Florida’s Native Indians: The Calusa

This week, our class dove into the fascinating world of the Calusa, known as “The Shell Indians” of southwest Florida! Students learned how this powerful tribe — whose population may have reached 50,000 — thrived without farming, instead fishing the coasts and waterways for mullet, pinfish, and catfish using handmade nets and shell tools. Rather than building with clay pottery like other tribes, the Calusa were master “shell collectors,” using shells for everything from tools and jewelry to spear points, and even building their homes on stilts along the water.

To bring history to life, kids got hands-on by crafting their own shell necklaces, just like young Calusa children might have worn generations ago. It was a fun and creative way to connect with Florida’s rich Native American heritage!

This entire week was all about the study of shapes! 🎨

Our students learned about two artists: Wassily Kandinsky, a pioneer of modern abstract art, and Reggie Laurent, a contemporary, self-taught abstract artist from Atlanta, Georgia. The students explored how both artists use shapes, lines, patterns, and bold colors to create unique works of art—and then created masterpieces of their own!

For the Love of Learning is seeking a caring, energetic, and dependable Elementary Teacher to join our growing Christian school family! We are looking for someone who has a passion for education, loves working with children, and desires to make a positive impact both academically and spiritually.

The ideal candidate will:
• Create a nurturing, Christ-centered classroom environment
• Teach and support elementary-aged students through engaging, hands-on learning
• Encourage kindness, confidence, creativity, and a love for learning
• Communicate well with parents and work closely with staff as part of a team
• Serve as a positive Christian role model for students

Qualifications:
