The Aya Fiber Studio is Stuart Florida's Premier Fiber Art workshop destination. Suzanne Connors is a professional textile artist from Stuart, Florida who embraces the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, an aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. She works primarily as a Shibori artist using natural Indigo dyes and the manual resist technique

September always feels like a season of transition—a time to slow down, prepare, and begin looking toward what comes next.

Although I’m still in the North Carolina mountains, there are September and October opportunities to gather, learn, and create before Aya Fiber Studio’s Stuart season begins on November 9.

And if it has been a while since you spent time creating in the studio—or simply working alongside a creative community—an Open Studio session might be just the ticket. Open Studio Days begin November 23, with morning, afternoon, and all-day options available throughout November and December. Studio Passes will also be available for those who want to return regularly.

Fall is approaching, the studio season is taking shape, and I’m looking forward to welcoming everyone back!

Imagine my surprise this morning when I opened my computer and saw this story featured in my MSN news feed:

“Aizome Shibori Signature Series: From Foundational Control to Personal Visual Language.”

Intrigued, I clicked—and discovered that it was about me, Aizome Studio, and the Shibori Signature Series offered through Aya Fiber Studio!

This feature was completely unsolicited. I had no advance knowledge of it and did not submit the story or pay for placement. Microsoft Copilot found and curated information from an article on the Aya Fiber Studio website and introduced the Signature Series to a much wider audience.

What a wonderful and unexpected affirmation of the work I have been developing: a progressive study of shibori that moves beyond completing a single project and guides students from foundational skills toward greater control, deeper understanding, and the development of their own visual language.

What is block printing—and why is it so captivating?

Block printing is a wonderfully hands-on process in which an image is carved into a linoleum block, inked, and pressed onto cloth or paper. Each carved mark becomes part of the finished design, giving the print a distinctive character that cannot be duplicated by a machine.

A single block can become so much more than one repeated image. Rotate it, overlap it, change the color, alter the spacing, or combine it with other blocks—and an entirely new pattern begins to emerge. It is part printmaking, part surface design, and part creative puzzle.

And why study with Jeanne Brady?

Jeanne brings an artist’s eye, thoughtful guidance, and a deep understanding of how carved imagery can develop into richly layered cloth. She will guide you through designing and carving your own blocks, exploring printing techniques, and discovering how repetition, placement, color, and layering can transform a simple motif into something uniquely yours.

September signals a shift. Although I am still here in the mountains, my thoughts are turning toward the studio and the season ahead.

Fall has always felt like a time of preparation—a season for tending to what is here while quietly making plans for what comes next. In the garden, the asters and mums are beginning to bloom. I’m planting fall bulbs for next season and cutting back what needs to be tended before I leave.

In the studio, I’m preparing for our fall workshops and October retreat while already thinking ahead to next season’s retreats. I may have even found the perfect new location—beautiful, private, peaceful, and surrounded by everything that makes a creative getaway feel truly special.

I would love to know: What kind of retreat would you most enjoy? A week devoted to indigo and shibori? A relaxed open-studio retreat with time for your own work? A combination of workshops, independent making, and a few local adventures?
