Our first trunk or treat was a success! The kids had a great time and even got a special little visit from Stanley the therapy dog 🐩 Thank you to everyone who came out and helped make this one of our new favorite traditions 🎃

☀️Creative Play☀️

✨These kiddos worked collaboratively to draw a beach scene during free play today! Free play is a great time to utilize NET (Natural Environment Teaching).

✨Today we worked on taking turns, conversational exchanges, and labeling colors and shapes all while having fun drawing on the chalkboard!

We love to see the ways ABA helps so many families ☺️

I used to think APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS (ABA- the gold standard, evidence based therapy for autism) helped my boys learn.

But the more I’ve seen the more I’ve realized- they actually could NOT learn without it.

There are 27 Evidence Based Interventions within ABA, and we use a majority of them every single day in most aspects of our life.

Like MODELING how to do something first, (even better to have a PEER model it for me!)

PROMPTING to assist, but fading those prompts systematically as to create independence.

REINFORCEMENT- some kind of “atta boy” to increase the likelihood that behavior will occur again.

SCHEDULES-Please let me know what to expect and what is expected from me. It decreases my anxiety, and helps me feel calm- like grown ups schedules do for you!

VISUAL SUPPORTS- Don’t just tell me, show me! How would you like to drive on a road with no street names or lines or signs?

DISCRETE TRIAL TRAINING-please break my learning down into small tasks so that one day I can do it on my own.

We know how to help them navigate home, school and the world because of these interventions. Not using them for my boys, when we know it helps them THRIVE would be like withholding medicine they need.

If you are a Behavior Analyst, you are one of the few that understands what I’m talking about and understands what a difference you make in our lives.

From the grateful momma of these two AMAZING boys, THANK YOU.

::.☀️Let’s take a S.E.A.T and talk about functions of behavior! ☀️.::

We often hear things like “Dalton just started crying out of nowhere and for no reason!”

There’s actually a function for EVERY behavior. Dalton is not crying for no reason.

There are 4 possible reasons that Dalton might be crying:

☀️(S) Sensory: engaging in a physical activity to remove aversive stimuli or to access a desirable feeling.
Ex: hand-flapping, twirling hair, or scratching an itch.

☀️(E) Escape: engaging in a behavior to stop or avoid situations and conditions we don’t like.
Ex: something is hard, something is boring, something makes you uncomfortable

☀️(A) Attention: engaging in a behavior to gain verbal or physical attention.
Ex: high fives, praise, reprimands, or smiles

☀️(T) Tangible: engaging in a behavior to gain access to a specific item or activity.

Each of these behaviors serve a function, meaning the behavior itself gets the person SOMETHING that they want or need.

Craft time is a great time to practice self-management skills and fine motor skills. Giving the kiddos the freedom to create how they want gives them a sense of control over their environment and a healthy outlet for self-expression!

☀️Learning should be fun!☀️

Our practice places a strong focus on play-based and child-led ABA therapy. Not all children learn the same and so often children get lost in the shuffle because their learning needs aren't being taken into consideration.

We pride ourselves at Awaken Behavioral Services on meeting the child where they are at and giving them the tools they need to learn new skills the way they know how!
