Study of Language and Math is a research study established by Dr. Marie Coppola under her Language Creation Lab at University of Connecticut.

Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) students perform poorly in mathematical tasks relative to normally hearing (NH) peers. Huge congratulations to Kristin Walker on her first first-authored publication!

We found that early access to language, either signed or spoken, supported children’s ability to convert numbers and quantities from one format to another, an ability that is critical for them to learn arithmetic and mathematics.

I don’t know about you but this really opens up a whole new world of information. Plus if you’re not in the mood to listen to an entire show, you can simply read through the text.

The results for Corina Goodwin, Emily Carrigan, Kristin Walker, and Marie Coppola's paper "Language not auditory experience is related to parent-reported executive functioning in preschool-aged deaf and hard-of-hearing children" showed that there is no difference between kids exposed to language at birth, whether that language was spoken or signed. But children who had delayed exposure to language did tend to have more trouble with executive functioning.

Corina Goodwin, Emily Carrigan, Kristin Walker, and Marie Coppola's paper "Language not auditory experience is related to parent-reported executive functioning in preschool-aged deaf and hard-of-hearing children" was published in Child Development.

This study used the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) as a parent-reported measure of preschool-aged children's executive function, and investigated the role of language and auditory experience within this measure.
