Dr. Kazem Kazerounian Named Interim Dean of School of Engineering

As of Friday June 1st, 2012 Dr. Kazem Kazerounian has assumed the role of Interim Dean of the School of Engineering while Dr. Mun Choi, Dean of the School of Engineering, serves as Interim Provost.

Dr. Kazerounian is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and for the past three years has served the School as the Associate Dean for Research and Strategic Initiatives. In this role, he was instrumental in strategic initiatives for expanding the School's research enterprise, educational innovation, and technology commercialization.

He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago (1984) and has held numerous leadership roles throughout his 28 years at UConn. He is the author of more than 100 scholarly papers, and the principal investigator of more than $7MM in research grants.

Dr. Kazerounian is the past Chair of the ASME Design Division Executive Committee, has chaired three major national and international conferences, and has served on the editorial boards of several professional journals. He is a Fellow of ASME and the recipient of the ASME Design Division Mechanisms and Robotics Award (a lifetime achievement award - 2006), the George Wood Award in recognition of significant contributions to the field of mechanisms and robotics (1997), and the ABB Outstanding Faculty Award (1997). He was inducted into the Connecticut Academy of Science & Engineering (CASE) in 2008.

Congratulations 2012 Graduates!

Commencement 2012: Ceremony and Celebration Students celebrated the completion of their UConn degrees along with their families and friends at various different school and college ceremonies in Storrs this weekend.

By generating and using power on-site with a PureCell system, UConn will prevent the release of more than 831 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually – the equivalent of planting more than 192 acres of trees. The reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions compared to a conventional power plant is equal to the environmental benefit of removing more than 110 cars from the road. In addition to the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, the PureCell system saves nearly 3.9 million gallons of water each year.

The National Bike Challenge: Get Up & Ride! (www.nationalbikechallenge.org) runs from May 1 to August 31. This is an opportunity to challenge yourself to ride more often. Record your rides, and add up the miles you’ve ridden, the calories you’ve burned, and the gas money you’ve saved. You become eligible for prize drawings after you’ve logged just three days on your bike. All bicycle trips - commute, utilitarian, recreational, mountain bike - can be entered in the challenge. Bike to Work – It’s Easier Than You Think!
Bike Walk Connecticut is taking the lead to encourage bike commuting in Connecticut. There are numerous events planned for National Bike to Work Day, May 18 and beyond - details to date and tips for biking to work can be found at http://www.bikewalkct.org/bike-to-work/. Check back often as this information is updated regularly. DEEP Commissioner Dan Esty will be biking to work on May 18, and he asks bicyclists to try the greener, healthier way to get around with this encouragement: “Any day that begins with a bike ride is a good day!”

The CT ITE Chapter has the pleasure of inviting you to participate in the “8th Annual Transportation Student Research Symposium” which will take place on April 10, 2012 at the University of Connecticut Storrs Campus. The theme of this year’s symposium is Sustainability in Transportation.

This symposium has become the most important gathering of transportation engineering professionals in Connecticut. Its main goals are:
- Offer opportunities to transportation engineering students to showcase their skills.
- Promote exchange of ideas and experiences among practicing professionals and academia.
