Greenhouse Studios Merges with Internal Insights & Innovation

We are thrilled to mark a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to digital scholarship as we announce the merging of two of UConn’s most innovative units: Greenhouse Studios and i3 (Internal Insights & Innovation). Housed in the Office of the Provost, the newly combined unit joins Greenhouse Studios’ pioneering approach to collaborative scholarly design with i3’s expertise in digital platforms, analytics, and web development. Together, they will accelerate UConn’s ability to support research and teaching at a time when digital communication is reshaping higher education.

This joint effort builds on a history of successful collaboration between the two groups, including projects such as Omeka Everywhere and Sourcery. By uniting their teams and resources, UConn is positioning itself at the forefront of digital innovation in teaching and research, expanding the reach of its interdisciplinary work across and beyond campus.

Leadership of the merged unit will be assumed by Joel Salisbury, current Director of i3. Tom Scheinfeldt, founding Director of Greenhouse Studios, will return full time to teaching and research but remain actively engaged as a collaborating principal investigator. Clarissa Ceglio will likewise continue her collaboration through her new role as Associate Director of the University of Connecticut Humanities Institute.

Sara Sikes and Brooke Gemmell will move to i3 as Managing Director and Associate Director of Strategy & Innovation, respectively, and will be located in i3’s office in the Rowe building. Principal Strategist Wes Hamrick and Sourcery Outreach Lead Amanda Breeden will continue in their roles under i3.

By bringing together creativity, technical expertise, and institutional vision, UConn is charting a course for the future of digital scholarship—expanding its reach, amplifying its impact, and reaffirming its leadership in meeting the challenges of the digital age.
