To decide the legitimacy of an organization, Fredrick Lawrence, secretary and chief executive officer of Phi Beta Kappa Society, said students should look at a honor society’s lineage. Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776 and has 500,000 members and 286 chapters nationwide. The process to create a university chapter takes at least 3 years of careful planning and consideration.
“Anyone who claims to be a honor society, what you want to know is how deep is their roots and how broad is their reach, and how much do they affect the world,” Lawrence said. “When you walk into an interview and tell someone you’re Phi Beta Kappa, they know what that means. And that’s a real honor society.”
How to tell sketchy honor societies from legitimate ones What to look for when trying to decide whether to join that honor society.
