News & Happenings from the UConn Plant Biodiversity Conservatory and Research Core at the University

The EEB Greenhouses contain one of the most diverse teaching plant collections in the US. This outstanding collection is a core unit of the EEB Biodiversity Research Collections and is used extensively for teaching and research here at the University of Connecticut. The Plant Collections are generally segregated into two groups - Research Collections (which are covered elsewhere) and the General Collection which includes most of the diverse teaching materials our facility is noted for.

Amorphophallus muelleri is in boom! This colorful species is native to Java and grows throughout Southeast Asia. It is related to the famous Amorphophallus titanum (Co**se Flower), but features a much smaller and less stinky inflorescence.

Floppy but still stinky! Less than 12 hours after our whirlwind bloom, Bullseye is all tuckered out.

We will be open until 2pm today for the final chance to get a good whiff of the smell!

Titan update!

We’ve reached a height of 56 inches! Growth has slowed down and the inside of the spathe is developing color! Looks like last week’s heat wave sped things up a bit.

We have staged the bud alongside some smaller Amorphophallus relatives and some active growing Titan Arum plants!

We are going to be open until midnight the night of the full bloom. Keep an eye out for the announcement when it’s time (Facebook, Instagram, the Mike and Mary Show on lite 100.5). Come by to visit the developing bud during our normal open hours.

You may have heard some whispers but it’s official! Our Co**se Flower (Amorphophallus titanum) is going to bloom!!!

For the first time since 2013, this stunning but stinky plant is going to put on a show.

Based on the size and growth rate of this inflorescence bud, we expect the bloom to open in the last week of April (not next week but the week after!!!).

Keep an eye out for more updates and news posts as we get closer to the special day!
