Major: Early Childhood

How would you describe your Northwestern experience?

It was both life- and career-changing. I’ve been in early childhood education for over a decade but had no degree in the field, though I already completed a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in educational administration. The lack of an early childhood degree was suppressing my opportunities. I was first drawn to the Northwestern program because of the comprehensive courses it offered and the reasonable cost that could be covered by my Iowa AEYC TEACH Scholarship. Northwestern’s program overflows with courses centered around relevant research in the early childhood field, and it’s practical for implementing the knowledge in the classroom. The program helped me become a master at assessing each child’s learning and development to inform my teaching and to prepare children for entering school.

How have you grown professionally and/or personally as a result of your Northwestern classes and relationships?

An unexpected element of this program is how it changed my relationships with children, families—and even my own family. Part of the Northwestern experience is the study of oneself and why your work is an important part of God’s plan. My professors guided me to find these answers. An example of this occurred recently in the classroom. One of my volunteers, who had over 20 years of experience in well-respected early childhood programs, stood in awe as I was able to remain calm and patient when a child spun out of control and hit me in the face. I told her I was able to do that with the teaching I received from Northwestern and the purpose the program helped me see in my life. This child needed me to help guide him to a better way of expressing himself and solving problems. Northwestern helped mold my mind, skills and—most importantly—my heart.

What impact has your Northwestern education had on your career, and what impact do you expect it to have going forward?

In 2018 when I started my journey with Northwestern College, I also founded the Trepson Foundation to help bring more quality childcare to Storm Lake. I set out to transition my childcare services from my home to an actual licensed center. It was a roller coaster of ups and downs, but our first childcare/preschool center was finally opened the same month, December 2020, that I received my early childhood degree from Northwestern. This was no coincidence. God had a plan to prepare me for my purpose. I am very grateful.s

Child care and Preschool cost relief could be coming soon for Iowan families making less than $105,000 per year.

Yesterday, the House Education and Labor Committee reintroduced The Child Care for Working Families Act with healthy sponsor support.

About the Child Care for Working Families Act
The Child Care for Working Families Act (CCWFA) would address the current child care crisis in four ways:

1. Capping costs for working families
a. No working family earning below 150 percent of state median income pays more than seven percent of their income on child care, regardless of the number of children they have.
i. Iowa’s median household income is about $60,000, so this benefit should apply to households making under about $90,000
b. Families earning above 75 percent of the state median income would pay on a sliding scale.
i. Iowa’s median household income is about $60,000, so this clause should apply to households making more than $105,000.

c. Families earning below 75 percent of the state median income will not have to pay anything at all.
i. Iowa’s median household income is about $60,000, so this benefit should apply to households making under about $15,000
ii. This is already implemented in Iowa under Child Care Assistance

2. Improving the quality and supply of child care for all children
3. Expanding access to high-quality preschool programs
4. Supporting higher wages for child care workers
1. Through child care subsidies, child care providers could be paid like public school teachers

We realize that overnight care and care starting at 5am is a big need in Buena Vista County, especially for children under 5 years old.

This special early morning and overnight is now being offered through registered partners. Transfers to center and/or school can be arranged.

• You must have an apartment or home with space for a child care with two exits leading to the ground in Storm Lake, Lakeside, Alta, Rembrandt, Sioux Rapids area
-Open from 5:30am – 5:30pm
· Flexible to implement similar site’s curriculum focus at homebased child care

· Maintaining a positive working relationship with Trepson Foundation
You intentionally practice patience and mindfulness

· Works well with staff, administrators, and families from other cultures

· People of multiple cultures describe you as friendly or likable

- Must help keep environment clean, safe, and healthy

-Must be able to lift up to a 30 pound child

-Must be able to move quickly and have the ability, when needed, to keep children safe
-Must be able to take 3-4 children under the age of 2 years old with at least 2 under the age of 1

Benefits

• When possible, support for children that need care or sub when you get sick, have appointments, or are on vacation
