Math is all about using logic and understanding. So here's a nice little logic puzzle.

Andy and Barney want to know when Floyd’s birthday is. Floyd gives each of them these ten possible dates, one of which is accurate:

Sept 22 -- Sept 23 -- Sept 26 -- Oct 24 -- Oct 25 -- Nov 21 -- Nov 23 -- Dec 21 -- Dec 22 -- Dec 24

Floyd tells Andy the correct month, and then separately Floyd tells Barney the correct day.

Andy says, “I do not know when Floyd’s birthday is, but I do know that Barney does not know when it is.”

Barney then says, “At first I did not know when Floyd’s birthday is, but after hearing what Andy said I know it now.”

Andy responds, “Okay, now I also know when Floyd’s birthday is.”

Six students have been selected for a history of math experience themed on the development of calculus. This spring they are studying the historical development of the topic before embarking on a fully funded travel course in May to London and Paris in order to see the locations where that development took place! We have not reached the nineteenth century yet, but this is the kind of thing they are studying!

In the late 19th century, Karl Weierstrass invented a fractal-like function that was decried as nothing less than a “deplorable evil.” In time, it would transform the foundations of mathematics.
