Huge congratulations to Stacy Opheim and her incredible 'Space Cadets' at East School! 🚀🌱 After a spring spent analyzing lunar soil simulants and growing 'Royal Purple Pod' beans, this small but mighty team took home one of the Spring 2026 Best-in-Show award in the elementary division! We are beyond proud of our East School friends! It’s inspiring to see such high-level scientific inquiry happening in our classrooms. Congratulations, Stacy and team! 🌙

🌕🚀 MISSION UPDATE: Astronaut Farmers at EES! 🌱
With the Artemis II mission is cruising around the Moon, our EES 1st graders have been hard at work right here on Earth—taking on the role of Astronaut Farmers!
Through the Plant the Moon Jr Challenge in Mrs. Drey’s STEM class, our students explored an exciting question: Can we grow food on the Moon?
Each team created their own soil mixtures using 50% or more lunar regolith (Moon soil simulant) combined with potting soil or coconut coir. From there, students became true scientists—testing different variables such as:
• Adding worm castings
• Using different types of water
• Comparing organic vs. chemical fertilizers
• And more!
Over an eight-week growing period, students carefully watered their plants and collected weekly data—just like real space researchers.
This incredible opportunity was made possible through the Iowa STEM Scale-Up Program.
