We are pleased to inform you that a group of alumni has formed a
committee to put into place an Independent Alumni Association for The Stony Brook School. Membership in the IAA will be open to all alumni and former faculty of SBS. We believe that at this critical time in the school's history it is essential for the SBS community to take advantage of the recently increased level of alumni involveme

nt and harness that energy for the good of the school. We have examined the previous SBS Alumni Association and looked at
other private school and college alumni associations for best practices in
order to develop an outline for a robust alumni organization. We are very excited about the opportunities and potential for the IAA to support both
the alumni and the school. This committee is comprised of the following members:

Adam De Chiara '83
Dirk Friedkin '84
Maggie Giles '82
Melissa Gunzburg (former faculty)
Charles Hanchett '97
Mark Hanchett '62
David Metz '96
Lucy Ridgeway Arney '92
Tracy Schlachter '84
Dave Seyfert '76
Joshua Shteierman '01
Harold Spooner '70

Hello friends - I hope you in the Northeast have fared as well as possible over the past week. I know there are thousands in the area who are suffering and in need, many without power and those who have lost everything.

That said, the IAA would like to reach out to SBS Alums who are in need, as well as those who are in a position to help. Of course, with power out, it may be hard to reach everyone, but if you are able to (or those on this page know of someone) and have needs, please let Dave Metz, Dirk Friedkin or Tracy Schlachter know.

Also, if you are in a position to help out - either through donations of food, clothing, supplies, gasoline, etc. or you have skills or generators/machines or anything along those lines - please let us know as well.

We want to do everything we can to help our fellow Alumni, and are confident that others will as well. Consider this a central location to come to for help/to offer help.

Thank you to everyone and God Bless!!

IAA UPDATE: September 2012

The Independent Alumni Association is off to a great start. Our rapidly growing membership includes distinguished former SBS faculty and a broad cross-section of alumni representing many decades of the School’s history. We are moving ahead with plans to formalize our association into a charitable organization which will allow us to fulfill our Mission for decades to come:

THE MISSION OF THE INDEPENDENT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION IS TO UNITE THE COMMUNITY OF THE STONY BROOK SCHOOL INTO AN ORGANIZATION THAT WILL EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER AND THE SCHOOL ON MATTERS OF MUTUAL INTEREST, PERPETUATE OLD TIES, FOSTER NEW FRIENDSHIPS AND ENCOURAGE THE ENTHUSIASM OF THE COMMUNITY FOR THE SCHOOL.

The IAA’s success will be grounded on the principles of transparency and accountability. Our mission statement and by-laws (when completed) will be made easily available to all alumni. Adherence to both the letter and spirit of these documents will be an essential duty of the IAA’s future leadership. Given the importance of laying a firm foundation, we are not rushing to get it done, but are instead focused on getting it right.

As always, we strongly encourage any input from fellow alumni and other members of the SBS community, please email us at [email protected].

Reminder: Please spread the word and join us on Alumni Day, Saturday October 6 at 4pm at the Three Village Inn for the first IAA event!

Character Before Career.

Welcome to the page for the Independent Alumni Association for The Stony Brook School.

On this page you will find information about the process of putting together the Association, as well as upcoming events.

Over the next couple weeks we will be updating you on what the plans will be, and we would very much like your feedback. Please note, however, that we are intent on keeping this page free from divisive conversations and are interested only in ideas that will further the reparation process between the School and the alumni.
