Curious minds grow big ideas.💡🌱

At The Goddard School of Stony Brook, we encourage children to ask questions, explore their surroundings and discover the world through hands-on learning and play. Because every “why?” and “what if?” is an opportunity to learn something new. 💙

How much screen time is too much? 📱

Screens are a part of everyday life, and using them doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. For young children, the goal is balance, boundaries and intentional use.

A few tips from The Goddard School® for building healthy screen habits:

👶 Under 18 months: Avoid screen time, except for video calls.
🧒 Ages 2–5: Aim for no more than 1 hour per day of high-quality programming.
🤝 Co-view when possible: Talk about what your child is watching and connect it to the real world.
⏰ Set clear routines: Try screen-free mealtimes, bedrooms and the hour before bed.
🎨 Prioritize hands-on play: Reading, building, pretending, exploring and outdoor play remain essential for development.

And most importantly, give yourself some grace. If your child gets extra screen time while you make dinner or get something done, you haven’t failed. Parenting is about finding what works for your family. ❤️

Happy National Poets Day! ✨

Anyone could be a poet. You don’t need to be famous, published, or even perfect with words. Poetry begins with imagination, feeling, and the courage to put your thoughts into words.

Dr. Seuss showed us how rhythm, rhyme, and a playful imagination can bring words to life. 📖💫

So today, celebrate the poet in you—and remember: everyone has a story worth putting into words. ❤️

The thing about a Goddard preschooler is they’re going to be curious. Keep the questions coming 👏

Personally, we’d hire them as videographers 📹

Kindergarten readiness can show up in everyday moments, not just big milestones. A few signals to notice:

1. They’re building confidence to try things independently. Examples: walking into a room first, asking for help, or giving something new a try.

2. They’re starting to recognize the letters in their name, even if they’re not reading just yet.

3. They’re showing care and responsibility at home. This could include things like helping pack a bag, feeding a pet, putting away toys, or getting through part of their routine with a little more ease.

Every child grows at their own pace - and readiness looks different for every family. Their preschool teachers can be a great partner in noticing strengths, celebrating progress, and helping you think through what comes next.
