Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory have successfully demonstrated a new wireless quantum link, transmitting quantum information through open air across 13 miles between the two institutions.

The first demonstration of its kind in the U.S., this milestone marks an important step toward expanding quantum networks beyond the limits of fiber-optic cables. The new link adds a wireless component to the nation’s longest quantum network, pioneered by SUNY - The State University of New York, Stony Brook and BNL.

This breakthrough brings researchers one step closer to new possibilities in quantum communication, sensing and computing, further establishing Long Island as a center for quantum innovation.

Get ready for an evening of rhythm, soul and celebration at The Avram!

On Thursday, August 27, at 7 pm, ‘All Heart’ brings Carlos Jiménez Mambo Dulce and an all-star Cuban descarga to Stony Brook Southampton for a celebration of Afro-Cuban jazz.

Inspired by legends including Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Mongo Santamaría and Cachao, the performance will fill The Avram with the rich percussion, bold horns and infectious grooves of a Cuban jam session.

We’re one of the top universities in the world!

has ranked #188 worldwide in the 2026 ShanghaiRanking Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), jumping 146 places from #334 last year. The University also rose to #59 among U.S. institutions.

The gains reflect Stony Brook’s growing research strength and academic excellence, including a major jump in the ranking for faculty Nobel Prize and Fields Medal recognition, where Stony Brook now ranks #38 worldwide.

Stony Brook University President Andrea Goldsmith has been honored with the IEEE Information Theory Society 2027 Claude E. Shannon Award!

This prestigious distinction is the highest honor awarded by the IEEE Information Theory Society, recognizing deep and lasting contributions to information theory. As part of the honor, President Goldsmith will deliver the Shannon Lecture next year at the annual symposium in Sorrento, Italy. Meet Charlotte Cain ’27, our URECA Researcher of the Month! 👋

A senior honors Stony Brook Computer Science and applied mathematics and statistics (College of Engineering & Applied Sciences at Stony Brook University) double major, Charlotte is using natural language processing to study how generative AI influences learning in engineering education settings. Her research through the URECA-Explorations in STEM program examines students' reliance on AI chatbots for problem-solving and how this reliance affects long-term memory.

Charlotte joined the PoliTech VIP team during her junior year and connected with her faculty mentor, Zhichen Liu, to pursue independent AI research. She presented her research poster at the Summer Symposium on July 31 and serves in leadership roles across campus organizations.
