We end our year the way we start it, with impressions of our hands and feet. Look how much we have grown!

Not just in inches, but in independence.

A Montessori education allows for children to develop at their own pace, less reliance on measurables and more reliance on what is intuitive. When you allow a child to pursue a topic until the end of their interest level, you will marvel at just how much curiosity and self-discipline they have.

The end of the year is a beautiful time at The Montessori Home School. We aren't saying good bye, we are releasing you to your next beautiful adventure.

Today we shared our beautiful life-size portraits with family.

Watching these portraits come alive is so much more than an art project. It truly encompasses our Montessori teachings. We talk about our heritage, how close our ancestors were born to the sun and how it affects the melanin in our skin, we talk about hair color, eye color, genetics, ehat dominant and recessive genes can look like, and we talk about color, color theory, blending colors, we talk about so much and even more than talking, we explore together.

This is one of our favorite annual traditions and it was such a joy to experience this with our caregivers and parents and friends.

This week, we began preparation for the life-size portraits with the children.

βœŒοΈπŸ•ŠοΈπŸŽ¨πŸ€ΈπŸΎβ€β™€οΈ

Students will stretch out on a roll of paper and have their outlines traced. Once the tracing part is complete, it will lead into our science unit on the layers of our skin and β€œwhy” we have different shades of our skin color. Using our exploration of continents and the rotation of earth we will understand why different parts of the world see the sun morethan other parts. The equator will be our guide. Understanding why humanskin can be different colors depending upon how close to the sun our ancestors lived.

Conversations about our ancestors will lead us into (my favorite) the most magical part of Maria Montessori's teachings - bringing Education for Peace to the classroom.

Education for Peace is the specific and concrete teaching that we all have the same fundamental needs, but that they look a bit different. We all need to eat, but we eat differently depending on where we live or what our culture may be. It is the same for clothing,
housing, transportation, and even spiritual needs(love).

This exciting lengthy process builds the children's endurance around developing vision and practicing patience as these special portraits come to life!

🎨

When we paint, we aren't just exploring the creation of art. Interacting with different textures helps children develop an understanding of the world around them. They can touch, interpret and engage with objects, and in turn, learn how to communicate and share their experience of them.

Learning through texture also helps to strengthen a child’s motor skills. A different amount of pressure and dexterity is required depending on whether the item is slippery, soft, hard, spongy, big or small.
