High Meadow School

High Meadow School N-8 progressive independent school on 10 wooded acres in Stone Ridge, NY. Inspiring curiosity, outdoor learning, and student voice! 🌳🌈

Though High Meadow School has grown and continues to evolve in response to the latest research in child development and education, it holds fast to its philosophical roots in the progressive education genesis and traditions…

In 1896, John Dewey, an educator, philosopher and psychologist established The Laboratory School in Chicago. He had 2 motivating factors: (1) a desire to test his theory that

children learn best by doing and (2) a concern that as American culture became increasingly mechanized and its communities more far-flung, its children would lose the opportunity to participate in the democratic principles by which small towns operated. At the very heart of progressive education lies 4 principles:

Education should prepare students to participate actively in a free, diverse and democratic society. Education should have the learner, not the teacher or the subject matter, at the center of the classroom experience. Education should be intrinsically, not extrinsically motivating. Teachers are the researchers in their classroom and are in collaboration with each other and the child to find the best way for that child to learn. Everything we do at High Meadow School reflects these beliefs- whether building relationships with and between children or with and between parents; creating curriculum; performing community service or communicating via whole school assemblies and presentations, staff meetings or parent meetings. Whenever any element of the program or experience is changed, we are particularly considerate and mindful of the benefit or loss to what High Meadow School stands for.

At High Meadow, we believe that education isn't just about what happens inside the classroom—it’s about discovering who you are and how you fit into the world around you. 🌈✨

"High Meadow’s school model allows students to experience childhood as a time of full curiosity and exploration of self and the world, while coming to understand the vital role they play in the community with other people."
— Michelle Healy, Head of School

On ā€œLife During Wartime,ā€ the first single from Talking Heads’ 1979 album Fear of Music, David Byrne
famously sang the immortal lyrics, ā€œThis ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco…no time for dancingā€¦ā€ Yet
all those anti-fun declarations go gleefully out the window when Mystic Bowie, aka the ā€œHead Dread,ā€
takes the stage, re-imagining and infusing fresh life into the Talking Heads’ classic catalog with his high
octane mix of roots reggae, ska and lover’s rock (aka ā€œromantic reggaeā€).

Since debuting his musically revolutionary Talking Dreads project live at the High Times Music Festival
on the beach in Negril in late 2015, the charismatic Jamaican-born singer and performer has electrified
audiences at more than 300 shows across North America – spinning the heads of initially skeptical
Talking Heads fans, and getting everyone else grooving along to the infectious, joyous rhythms and
jubilant spirit of his native island.
