The University of the Pacific community mourns the passing of Jim Morgali, a mainstay at the School of Engineering and Computer since joining Pacific in 1991. A brilliant civil engineering professor, he is remembered for his focus on students and helping establish the engineering management program.

Jim Morgali, pillar of Pacific’s engineering program, dies at 93 James R. Morgali, a respected professor of civil engineering at University of the Pacific who helped establish its engineering management program and supported students for more than 50 years, died Dec. 1 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Stockton. He was 93.

We’re so proud of all of our students who worked with CO-OPs & special projects this summer!

Emily is part of SOECS’s Computer Science program & is working as a Cybersecurity Analyst Intern for the City of Stockton IT department🤩 “In my role, I investigate & address emails reported as phishing to ensure they are properly mitigated. I monitor network traffic & alerts to quickly identify & respond to security incidents, using endpoint protection tools to maintain network security. Additionally, I develop & deliver cybersecurity training for employees & prepare detailed technical reports on security incidents.” 🌟

When asked how SOECS has helped prepare her for this opportunity, Emily stated: “In my Computer Systems & Networks class, I gained a good understanding of network architecture & protocols, which was relevant when I had to monitor network traffic & manage security tools such as firewalls and other systems. Additionally, the System Administration & Security course provided me with foundational knowledge on managing network security & responding to incidents, which helped when I encountered & security vulnerabilities in my co-op role.”

🌟We’re proud to share that following Emily’s co-op experience, she has been offered a part time position with the hopes of her coming on full time with the City of Stockton following her graduation in December!🥳We can’t wait to see what Emily’s future career has in store for her! Mitchell is part of SOECS’s class of ‘25 & is working as a Plant Manufacturing Intern at Niagara Bottling 🥳 He is currently assisting the plant engineer with maintenance & installation of new equipment. Some of Mitchell’s daily tasks & research include: “performing preventative maintenance, cleaning of production lines & water farm, & designing replacement parts for production machines using SolidWorks”. 🌟

When asked what his most memorable experience has been at Niagara Bottling thus far Mitchell stated: “The most fun project I have worked on is programming 3D cameras around loading dock doors to sense for obstructions when automatically loading & unloading to increase safety”

We’re so happy to see Mitchell enjoying his CO-OP experience & are looking forward to seeing what his future career path has in store for him!

John is a part of SOECS’s class of ‘25 & is working as a Performance Engineer & System Software Intern at NVIDIA, a SOECS CO-OP! 🥳He is currently creating a new feature for the NVIDIA website which involves designing the frontend structure & developing a new service for the backend structure. “My day typically includes tackling assigned tasks, submitting my work for team review, & making necessary revisions based on feedback. I also attend weekly meetings to discuss my progress and plans.”

When asked how SOECS has helped prepare him for this opportunity, John stated: “My classes at SOECS have been incredibly useful at NVIDIA. Specifically, I took COMP 129 (Software Engineering) before my internship & the tools & agile methodology I learned in that class were very similar to what we use here at NVIDIA.🌟
