Tonight, the Stockton Unified School District Board is voting to terminate 103.5 certificated positions, including 7 counselor positions, 51 elementary teaching assignments, and approximately 15 high school teaching assignments. These drastic cuts are not normal, and even by the district's own financial disclosures they are unnecessary.
Strangely, these are being considered on the same night (in Item 11.1) that the district's own budget department claims "the District is able to meet its financial obligations for the current and two subsequent fiscal years." This makes no sense. These actions will make it harder for our students, schools and system to recover. Especially in the last months of a pandemic, they are cruel to the hardworking staff members who have valiantly pivoted to distance learning.
Friendly reminder - members of the community can submit any public comment to [email protected].

Invest in children and their families, and our communities will prosper. Thank you to Congressional Democrats (including our own Congressman Jerry McNerney!) for fighting for these needed, life-saving resources to be included in the :
"Families with children are about to get more money, once the nearly $2 trillion stimulus bill becomes law...
Though the $1,400 stimulus checks included in the bill may grab the headlines and deliver money quickly, the package's expansion of the child tax credit could mean more money for many families over time. The current version of the bill increases the existing child tax credit, or CTC, to as much as $3,600 per child (more than double the $1,400 per dependent in the stimulus check) and would let families receive the funds "periodically" instead of annually during tax season. The bill would work to make sure lower-income families receive the payments. This increase in the CTC would reduce child poverty by 40%, according to a report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities."
Child tax credit 2021 passes Senate, teeing up more money than the stimulus check
Families with children are about to get more money, once the nearly $2 trillion stimulus bill becomes law. That could happen as soon as next week.

In the last few days of Black History Month, I'm coming back to the words of its originator, Carter G. Woodson, who (far ahead of his time, in 1927) wrote:
"What we need is not a history of selected races or nations, but the history of the world void of national bias, race hate, and religious prejudice."
Happy Black History Month, Stockton Unified School District!
How Carter G. Woodson's Life's Work Fueled the Creation of Black History Month
The self-made scholar promoted "Negro History Week" as part of efforts to embed Black studies into the American education system.
