As we navigate our way through Filipino American history month and celebrate on his birthday, I hope we find each other. Somewhere in the middle of talking story is true camaraderie, umbrellas in hand, rain or shine. There is community, connection and multigenerational learning. There is laughter, empathy, and peace. Here's to finding all of that beyond October. Here's to celebrating each other. Happy birthday Larry. Happy familia. 💜🎂 and thank you to Roger for hanging out with me visiting Larry. If you take a tour of Delano and Agbayani Village, longtime Delano organizer Roger will be your guide.

Yes! Remember this day. with

On this day 56 years ago (September 7, 1965), at Filipino Hall in Delano, California, members of the Agricultural Workers Committee (which comprised primarily of Filipino American migrant workers) voted to go on strike. The next day (September 8, 1965), over 1500 Filipino Americans initiated the Delano Grape Strike - a five year action that would later be deemed one of the most successful labor movements in US history.
Most people do not learn this history at all. When people are taught about the strikes, Filipino Americans are often erased from the narrative, even though they were the first to take action. And while Cesar Chavez has multiple holidays, schools, streets, and postal stamps named in his honor, many people may not ever learn that it was Larry Itliong who convinced Chavez that it was time to strike and that he should be equally credited for leading the movement.
We can no longer wait for people to tell our stories for us. We have to write them ourselves. Support the Filipino American National Historical Society. Support books like Journey for Justice by Dr. Dawn Bohulano Mabalon and Gayle Romasanta and films like Delano Manongs by Marissa Aroy. And write your own stories and narratives too.
And if you’re a lover of musical theater, you can also support “Larry: A New Musical”! Register at www.tinyurl.com/LarryPremiere for a free virtual screening on October 2, 2021.

We know the truth and we recognize it for what it is and what is was - white supremacy. For international women's history month we stand with our asian sisters who have long been stereotyped and hyper sexualized and sought out trophies for white supremacists. This was never our narrative. Our hearts go out to the families of those who were killed yesterday and to our aapi community.
