San Joaquin County SELPA Our goal is to provide support to district personnel leading to improved
programs and resources.

The San Joaquin County Special Education Local Plan Area (SJC SELPA) is a regionalized services

Unified School District, Lincoln Unified School District, Linden Unified School District, Manteca Unified School District, New Jerusalem School District, Ripon Unified School district, and Tracy Unified School District. Support is provided to these districts upon request and may include consultation and/or direct service. An important function is to act as an interagency liaison and bridge between community resources and student needs.

πŸ“š Special Education Acronym of the Week!

This week’s term is P.W.N. β€” Prior Written Notice.

A Prior Written Notice is a written explanation provided by a school before proposing or refusing changes to a student’s special education services. It helps families understand what is being proposed, why, and the information considered in making the decision. πŸ’‘

✨ Why it matters: Clear communication helps families stay informed and meaningfully participate in the special education process.

πŸ—£οΈ INTERPRETER TRAINING | October 2

IEP meetings are an important opportunity for families to understand their child’s educational plan and participate meaningfully in the special education process. Quality interpretation helps make that possible. 🀝

🎯 INTENDED AUDIENCE:
This training is specifically intended for educational interpreters and school staff who provide or support interpretation during IEP meetings, particularly those working with Spanish-speaking families.

The training will focus on strengthening interpretation quality in educational settings and during the IEP process, with most examples provided in Spanish.

πŸ“š Special Education Acronym of the Week!

This week, we’re highlighting B.I.P. β€” Behavior Intervention Plan.

A BIP outlines positive strategies and supports designed to help a student be successful at school. It can provide a clear, consistent approach for understanding and responding to behavior while supporting student growth. πŸ’‘

✨ Why it matters: When we understand the β€œwhy” behind behavior, we can create supports that help students learn, participate, and thrive.

🧠 MINDSET MATTERS: Change your words, change your mindset! 🌱✨

The way we talk to ourselves shapes how we learn, grow, and face challenges. A simple shift in self-talk can transform a moment of frustration into an opportunity for growth.

Here are 6 positive reframes to try next time you feel stuck:

🌱 "I'm still learning. I'll keep trying."

⭐ "Everyone is talented in many ways."

πŸ’‘ "With more practice, it will be easier."

πŸ’– "Mistakes help me learn."

⏰ "This may take some time and effort."

🧩 "I can try different strategies."

Whether you’re supporting a student, a child, or simply practicing self-compassion yourself, small shifts in language make a big impact. πŸ’

Which one of these gentle reminders do you need to hear today? Tell us in the comments! πŸ‘‡

Walking into an IEP meeting can feel overwhelming, but you don’t need a degree in special education to advocate effectively for your childβ€”you are already the most important expert on the team! πŸ’‘βœ¨

Here is your Parent IEP Meeting Starter Pack to help you feel confident and prepared:

πŸ““ Questions on your mind – Write them down ahead of time so you don't forget anything in the moment.

πŸ“± Notes from home – Observations on behavior, wins, and challenges outside of school.

🎯 Strengths & interests – Frame the conversation around what your child loves and does well!

πŸ’ Specific concerns – Key areas where you feel extra support or modifications are needed.

πŸ“„ Current IEP copy – Keep it handy to reference existing goals and accommodations.

πŸ’™ An open mind + your voice – Collaborative advocacy starts with sharing your unique perspective.

Save this post for your next meeting, and share it with a parent who might need a little extra encouragement today! πŸ‘‡
