At the first Insightful Morning session of the year, educators learned how systems and leadership improve reading in schools. 📚✨

Literacy expert and author Pati Montgomery led an interactive session for teachers, coaches, administrators and other literacy leaders, emphasizing that lasting improvement goes beyond curriculum and professional development.

Montgomery also spent the afternoon at the first San Joaquin County Early Literacy Community of Practice meeting of the year. The members of the group represent schools from across the county with a focus on improving literacy outcomes. 🤝🏫

Great leadership isn’t just about steering the ship inside our walls. It’s about stepping out into the community to drive real, lasting impact. 🌍✨

We recently convened leaders from across the entire organization for our Leadership Summit! To kick off the event, our leaders hit the ground running with specialized industry tours designed to explore new partnerships and pinpoint where our services can further strengthen our local community.

Back at the summit, the focus shifted inward to team growth and workplace culture. Leaders dove into hands-on breakout sessions where they:

Lose your voice for a week 🗣️ or lose your phone for a month? 📱 What would you pick? 🤔

That was the writing prompt for one.Program students in teacher Christina Leon’s Manteca classroom Thursday morning.

Around the same time, elementary students in a one.Program site in Fernanda Aguila’s classroom were learning math, history, and writing developing a plan to design and sell sneakers at their school south of Stockton.

Meanwhile, one.Program culinary students in Michael Speer’s class were making both pozole and wood-fired pizza in their Downtown Stockton kitchen.

It was a typical Thursday morning in the one.Program, the SJCOE’s countywide alternative education program. Dr. Troy Brown, San Joaquin County Superintendent of Schools, spent part of the morning meeting with students and staff at one.Charter Main, one.Charter Elementary, and the Federal Building, where these classroom activities and many others were taking place.

High school students got a guided tour of future careers in education at the SJCOE on Monday. 🚌 🍎 🔮

At the first of two Education Industry tours, students made connections and heard personal stories about how teachers, counselors, artists, nurses, and other professionals found their careers in the education field.

The students already had an interest in educational careers. Students from Edison High School (Stockton Unified School District) are on a CTE (career technical education) education pathway at their school. Students from Venture Academy Family of Schools were on the educator-focused TEACH! Academy.

Students heard from representatives from a variety of SJCOE departments and programs, including Teachers College of San Joaquin, Early Education and Support, CodeStack, STEM Programs, and Student Engagement and the Arts. 🤝

The day was organized by SJCOE Human Resources and College and Career Readiness departments in collaboration with San Joaquin A+. More students will be back at the SJCOE for another education industry tour later this month. The nonprofit also organizes tours for various industries in the county, including agriculture, business/sports management, media, and health care.

Jumped right into a great site visit at Victor Elementary School (Lodi Unified School District)! 🎒✨

From witnessing early literacy strategies firsthand to observing dynamic music classes and touring recent campus improvements, Principal Berry and her team demonstrated a clear commitment to student growth and success.

The highlight of the day came when a third grader challenged San Joaquin County Superintendent Dr. Troy Brown to a jump rope showdown. Naturally, he couldn't skip the opportunity! 🌟

To top off an amazing visit, Victor Elementary shared they earned the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Silver Level Award for their outstanding school culture. Way to go, Vikings!

This week, San Joaquin County Superintendent Dr. Troy Brown officially administered the oath of office to our newest Teachers College of San Joaquin (TCSJ) Board Members: Jessica Escobedo, Donald Gatti, and Greg Leland.

As the higher education arm of the San Joaquin County Office of Education, TCSJ is dedicated to empowering educators through innovative, practice-based credential and graduate programs tailored to meet the unique needs of our local schools and communities.

It’s never too late to get a high school diploma, and it is never too late to explore the universe. 🪐✨🎓

Students in the SJCOE’s Come Back Kids (CBK) program took their studies into orbit and beyond with help of the Star Lab portable planetarium this week. CBK students from multiple sites came to the one.Hammer site in Stockton, where the Star Lab was in residence this week.🔭

CBK is a diploma-recovery program for adult students of all ages. It provides flexible instruction that allows its students to come back to school and get a high school diploma to help them unlock new career opportunities.

CBK teachers trained with SJCOE STEM Programs to learn how to use the Star Lab, which is available to schools across the county. On Wednesday teachers Lauren Lockwood and Linda Song tied the planetarium experience to science as well as social studies and English language arts.

“It was awesome,” said Margie, a CBK student. 🌟

Early literacy is on a roll in San Joaquin County aboard the Training Wheels story-time bus! 🚌📚

Last year, we set a goal to collect 2,500 books so children could take a book home during Training Wheels visits. We’re excited to share that we reached our goal this month! 🎉

Thanks to generous donations from staff and community members, thousands of books are now ready to help children build a love of reading.

A program of the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library, Training Wheels is a mobile early literacy vehicle that travels to preschools and daycare centers. Each visit includes a special storytime where children ages 0–5 and their teachers and caregivers enjoy stories, songs and poetry.

The book drive supports the countywide push to improve early literacy, a key focus of San Joaquin County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Troy Brown’s Early Literacy Initiative and the San Joaquin County Early Literacy Community of Practice, which brings together educators from school districts across the county. 🤝
