The Emeriti Society is saddened at the loss of Jed Olaf Scully.

Jed "Skip" Olaf Scully passed away peacefully in his Fair Oaks home on Saturday, December 21, 2019. Born on July 27, 1931 in Paris, France, the first of five children of Frank and Alice Scully, Jed spent his youth primarily in Hollywood, California. Jed served as an ROTC commander in High School prior to joining the US Air Force. Between active duty and National Air Guard service, Jed spent 36 years in the Air Force, eventually reaching the rank of Brigadier General prior to retiring from the service. He attended UCLA and UCLA Law School, earning his Juris Doctorate in 1961. Jed dedicated the majority of his professional career to education holding a number of collegiate teaching and administration positions. He spent several years as Dean of Foreign Students UCLA and served both as Vice President of Student Affairs and Director of Clinical Legal education at Loyola University and its law school. Jed made the Sacramento area his home in 1979 when he was appointed as a Professor of Law at the University of Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law. As a well-respected attorney and educator Jed remained involved in the Sacramento legal community until his passing. In addition to serving as the Chair of the Academic Council of the University of the Pacific he was also one of the founders of Sacramento’s Kennedy Inn of Court. After serving over five decades in higher education he retired but remained an active member in the Kennedy Inn of Court and was a member of the Executive Committee of the University of Pacific’s Emeriti Society. Jed is survived by his wife of over 40 years Glendalee “Glee” Scully. Jed and Glee have seven children, Patrick, Andrew, Suzanne, Greg, Gavin, Sean and Zachary. Jed was predeceased by his son Michael. He is grandfather of 10 grandchildren, (with two more to be born in 2020). After retirement, Jed and Glee spent a part of each year in Montigny, France where they enjoyed many happy times with close French friends and American visitors, traveling and enjoying the historic French countryside. Jed was an active member of Divine Savior Catholic Church in Orangevale, California. Jed was known for his warm sense of humor, booming laugh, sharp intellect, erudite insightful essays, deep love for his family, friends, and a lifetime commitment to teaching and mentoring generations of law students. He will be missed each and every day by those who were blessed enough to be part of his life. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 31, 2020, at Divine Savior Catholic Church, 9079 Greenback Lane, Orangevale, California. A luncheon reception will follow. In lieu of flowers a donation in Jed’s memory may be made to the McGeorge School of Law in Memory of Jed Scully. More information can be found at go.mcgeorge.edu/makeagift.

If you have not received this already, Walt Zimmerman, Emeriti Society Executive Board Member, wishes to relay the text of this email from President Designate Callahan.

Dear Pacific faculty members:

I wanted to take a moment to send you best wishes at the start of a great new academic semester. I hope everyone had a joy-filled and restful holiday season with family and friends, and are excited for the new year ahead.

I also wanted to thank those of you I have already had the pleasure of meeting for the extraordinarily warm welcome you have extended. Jean and I truly feel like Pacific is home, even before we officially join you, thanks to your warmth and kindness.

While I am just at the start of learning more about Pacific, our people, history, culture and potential for the future, I am struck by the common theme underscored by so many of you: that Pacific is a truly special place, focused squarely and authentically on the success of our students. I am more convinced than ever that – working together – we can and will make our outstanding university even better in the months and years to come. And I can’t wait to get started on this journey with you.

We have designed a series of visits to all of our campuses throughout the first half of 2020, before my official start on July 1, to continue to meet and learn from you. I also plan to spend dedicated time at each of our schools and colleges, meeting with faculty, students and staff at each. You will be hearing more about those visits shortly. The first will be in less than two weeks when we join many of you on the Stockton campus for our alumni festivities. During that visit, I will have the opportunity to meet with faculty from the College of the Pacific and the Eberhardt School of Business, along with a separate meeting with leaders of our Academic Council. Visits to all of our other schools will be scheduled for future trips throughout the spring semester.

I look forward to meeting each of our talented faculty members. But in the meantime, I’d also like to hear from you electronically. I have started conversations with some of you already via email, and those exchanges have proven to be enormously valuable. I encourage everyone to drop me a line if you have the time. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Pacific – past, present and, most importantly, future. What do you see as our great advantages to build upon? Challenges to overcome? And, quite simply, what advice do you have for me as I start? I would appreciate any and all of your thoughts, guidance, viewpoints and ideas. You are the experts on our university, and I want to learn from you. Please send directly to me at [email protected]. I only ask for patience. Since my jobs here at Arizona State University are keeping me quite busy, I may not be able to respond as quickly as I would like.

Thank you again for the wonderful welcome to Pacific. I am proud, honored and humbled to serve as your next president and I know that, working together, we will take our outstanding university to new heights. In the meantime, here’s to a great spring semester!

Best regards,

Chris

Everyone attending gets one free raffle ticket for fun Austen prizes – plus there’s a benefit raffle for the Stockton Public Library system (tickets $2 each) with extra special prizes, including a complete hardback set of Austen’s novels and a beautiful Austen travel bag set. New this year: a Jane Austen fashion display, including an authentic Regency gown.

The event is free and open to the public – so bring along friends and family.
