“The key to your heart lies hidden in the heart of another.”
🗝️❤️ 🌹
– Swami Kripalu

There’s truly nothing like the magic of a YTT sangha. ✨

A group of souls coming together to learn, grow, transform - and to explore not only the practice of yoga, but themselves and each other along the way. 🧘🏽‍♀️

What a fun (and hardworking!) summer it’s been coordinating the 200hr YTT. 😎

I’m walking away with such deep gratitude for this radiant community - thank you for showing up so fully, so openly, and with so much heart. 💫

This path is never walked alone. Again and again, I’m reminded of the power of connection, presence, and shared purpose. So grateful to walk this journey alongside all of you. 🙏

I am beyond thrilled to be facilitating this weekend offering with the one and only , author of the book by the same name - The Great Work of Your Life.

I (on accident, really) attended this very program many years ago, and it was a threshold moment. A turning point. It changed my life and divided it into before and after. In the best way possible.

This program is for anyone who:
- wants to connect to their true Self
- is interested in not just doing yoga but living yoga
- is in, or approaching, a transition
- wants to connect to a community of fellow humans 'on the path'
- wants to disconnect for a few days ... in order to REconnect to Self

See a theme here? Connection!

Yoga = union, connection

Come join us and explore how yoga philosophy can inspire you to live with more intention, skill, and purpose. And we'll have fun, too!

This is 50. (10 days into my couch and Netflix era)

Half a century of living, learning, and becoming.

Discovering what it means to feel whole, even when life is messy.

Learning to embrace the pauses, the challenges, the joys, and all the beautifully imperfect moments.

To everyone who’s walked alongside me—whether for a moment or a lifetime—thank you.

Your love, kindness, and presence have shaped me in ways I’ll carry forever.

To my younger self: You made it. You’ve grown and healed in ways you never imagined.

To my future self: I can’t wait to see where we go next—how we’ll keep evolving, creating, and giving.

To all of you: Wherever you are on your path, know this—you are whole, just as you are, right now.

Here’s to this moment, to the gifts of today, and to dreaming about what’s still ahead.

💫 Here’s to 50—grateful, growing, and full of possibility.

What’s a lesson you’ve learned or a moment that shaped you? Share below—I’d love to hear your stories. ❤️

With love, grace, and joy,
Ilana

As much as I hope to feel better, it is also (perhaps more?) true that I want to get better at feeling.

Here I am with yet another opportunity for not only physical, but personal, growth and transformation (thanks, Life).

Yesterday I had a hip replacement.

😮

(Happy early 50th birthday to me?!)

🎂🥳🎁

When I told people in the weeks leading up to surgery, almost everyone shared a story of their 30 year old friend, 40 year old step-sister, barely 50 year old colleague.

And yet, I found my mind playing all sorts of tricks on me:

- Not wanting to even tell people ("I'm having a medical procedure, I'll be out for a little bit" followed by "Yes, everything is fine" in response to understandably concerned queries, given my crypticness)

- What did I do wrong? (nothing ... as I often cue my yoga students "you can't do it wrong" ... and yet you can learn from your past and do it differently in the future)

- Why did I run through the pain after I tore my labrum (and what was I figuratively running from?)

- How could a yoga teacher need a hip replacement? (even though I know many who do ... and ... really Ilana? you think yoga is going to make you superhuman?)

And more.

Today, a day later, I have a new hip and a new opportunity to be more fully me.

To share the real, imperfect, weird, beautiful, magical person I am.

And maybe, just maybe, remind and inspire you that you can choose to do the same.

I will fly again ... literally and figuratively ... I've got so much more to discover 🦋✈️💪🏽🧠🌍

When News Is Bad

Take seriously your grief.
It is love, stripped bare.
Let it flow through you.

Trust that you are held.
We all are held by the Beloved,
the Broken-Hearted One,
the One who Suffers most Deeply.

Know you are not alone.
Millions bear your sorrow.
Ancestors and even unborn generations
walk with you gratefully.

Seek others who are tenderhearted.
Receive all the grace you can.
In the flesh is best, but even in spirit,
know we are here.

Trust the Goodness.
God has not given up on us.
Through every disaster grace remains.
Refuse to despair.

Choose courage over selfishness,
trust over fear, love over anger.
You do not know the end of grace.

There is much you cannot change,
but bring healing where you can.
We are not promised to be given light,
but to shine with light.

Don’t become an enemy of the world
and its brokenness. Stay tender.
Become a source of comfort and joy for others.
Let this purpose bear you through the darkness
and you yourself will become light.

Take courage; trust grace;
stay connected; practice love.

I offer you what I need right now in my feed:

Smiles

Kindness

Inspiration

Wisdom

Peace

Hope

Reality

Because when we fight reality, we suffer. Hard stop. Always. 100% of the time.

AND.

We CO-CREATE reality.

We are not passive bystanders (hopefully that was shown in the voting booth yesterday).

We are active participants in our future.

Even if/when it doesn’t feel that way.

How do I find a balance between succumbing to what is and crafting what I not only simply want and need, but believe in and value, from the deepest level of my being?

And how is it that I find myself surrounded by (on the edge of … look at the map … or actually, better yet, don’t) a country that seems to have such different values than me?

I’m thankful for my bubble of like-minded, like-hearted, like-spirited souls … and yet … I feel so alone.

I can’t help but wonder - in the spirit of curiosity …

is there something that I am not seeing? (always)

is there more to this story than feels possible right now? (absolutely)

is there still room for me and my beliefs and values in this country? (assuredly)

is there something this moment in history will offer that maybe isn’t as bad/hard/awful (fill in the negative and judgmental word) as it seems right now? (maybe)

Truth is, this moment is part of a much larger story, and maybe just maybe our role in it is to carry forward our values, our kindness, and our sense of hope.

Yoga teaches us the practice of getting comfortable being uncomfortable. And I am certainly currently stretched out of my comfort zone.

(After I kick, scream, shout, and cry) I chose to embrace this opportunity to rise above, to connect with others, and to keep showing up with love.

We are always stronger together.

Perhaps today (and everyday) you take a moment (or two or three) to breathe, to quiet, to walk in nature, or do something that fills your spirit.

Stay anchored in peace today, friends.

More is yet to come.

I write words and delete them over and over.

None of them are adequate or right or enough or maybe they're too much.

Josh was (is) my brother, my kin, my blood.

I have never, until yesterday, known what it's like to be here on this Earth without him.

There's an emptiness I can't describe. A loneliness I can't pinpoint. A loss that feels nonsensical after the reality of the past 30 years.

And yet, here it is.

Grief, front and center. Not sharing the spotlight.

And I am exactly where I need to be right now.

I Want to Listen to Your Absence
by .trommer

I want to listen to your absence
the way I listen to the night—
the way the dark somehow
invites a deeper listening.
I want to hear, for instance,
the way silence fills in
where your voice has been,
or the way the room seems to know itself
by the pound of missing footsteps,
and in this way, I find you
where I cannot find you.
I am thinking of how the night opens up
between the calls of the owl
and how I listen in that interval
not only with my ears, but with my skin.
I want to listen for you with my lungs—
as if every breath is attentive
to the syllables of grief, of love.
I want my heart to angle in
to hear what the silence has to say.
I don’t want to hear what I most want to hear—
I want to hear what is really here.
I want to listen and learn from the listening.
I want to hear what is true.
I want to listen into your absence
and lean into it the way I lean into the night—
something so much larger than me,
something familiar and always new,
something so present, yet unable to be touched.
Something I am still learning to love.

Welp, it was hot 🥵 ... a different kind of hot yoga 😝

So much fun to share yoga at Common Ground festival in Pittsfield yesterday.

A fun day connecting with the Berkshires community and taking Kripalu "off the hill" with .

This pitta is grateful to be back on campus in air conditioned rooms today, though :)

Just brightening the feed with a reminder of connection, friendship, heart-to-heart conversation, time and space to slow down and savor.

I highly recommend Holiday Tea at - hits all the senses: warmth from the logs crackling in the fireplace, eyes feasting on the softly and candle lit library space in the beautiful and historic building, music to the ears of voices softly laughing and harpist serenading and - of course - delicious scones/sandwiches/desserts/teas.

Wishing you nourishment, now and always, in the forms of
🕯️light
🎶 music
👯‍♂️ friendship
and, oh yeah, 🫖 tea

If peace comes from seeing the whole,
then misery stems from a loss of perspective.

We begin so aware and grateful. The sun somehow hangs there in the sky. The little bird sings. The miracle of life just happens. Then we stub our toe, and in that moment of pain, the whole world is reduced to our poor little toe. Now, for a day or two, it is difficult to walk. With every step, we are reminded of our poor little toe.

Our vigilance becomes: Which defines our day—the pinch we feel in walking on a bruised toe, or the miracle still happening?

It is the giving over to smallness that opens us to misery. In truth, we begin taking nothing for granted, grateful that we have enough to eat, that we are well enough to eat. But somehow, through the living of our days, our focus narrows like a camera that shutters down, cropping out the horizon, and one day we’re miffed at a diner because the eggs are runny or the hash isn’t seasoned just the way we like.

When we narrow our focus, the problem seems everything. We forget when we were lonely, dreaming of a partner. We forget first beholding the beauty of another. We forget the comfort of first being seen and held and heard. When our view shuts down, we’re up in the night annoyed by the way our lover pulls the covers or leaves the dishes in the sink without soaking them first.

In actuality, misery is a moment of suffering allowed to become everything. So, when feeling miserable, we must look wider than what hurts. When feeling a splinter, we must, while trying to remove it, remember there is a body that is not splinter, and a spirit that is not splinter, and a world that is not splinter.

It only takes a reminder to breathe,
a moment to be still, and just like that, something in me settles, softens, makes space for imperfection. The harsh voice of judgment drops to a whisper and I remember again that life isn’t a relay race; that we will all cross the finish line; that waking up to life is what we were born for. As many times as I forget, catch myself charging forward without even knowing where I’m going, that many times I can make the choice to stop, to breathe, and be, and walk slowly into the mystery.
