I only had the chance to meet Sonnie a couple of times, but her impact on my Montessori journey has been so much bigger than those few moments.

She was one of those people who helped shape Montessori for so many of us. Through her work, her teaching, and her love for children, she inspired generations of educators to see the child just a little differently.

Thank you, Sonnie, for being such an important part of my Montessori story and for leaving our community better than you found it.

Rest peacefully. Your legacy will live on in classrooms, in teachers, and in the children whose lives you helped shape. Sending love to your family and to everyone whose heart is a little heavier today.

We had the pleasure of spending our day with Sonnie McFarland, renowned author and American Montessori Society living legacy.

We spent the day talking about Peace Education and her books; Honoring the Light of the Child, and Montessori Parenting- A guide to Unveiling the Authentic Child.

She shared ideas for peaceful living skills for children and creating peaceful classrooms.

🏡 Montessori in the Home 🧡

This popped up in my memories today… July 8, 2011.

Back then, I probably just thought she was helping me make dinner. Looking back now, I realize she was doing so much more than cutting carrots.

She was building confidence.
She was learning patience.
She was strengthening her hands.
She was discovering that “I can do this.”

One of my favorite things about Montessori is that the magic isn’t in expensive materials. It’s in everyday life.

Invite them into the kitchen. Let them wash the vegetables, slice a banana, stir the batter, fold the towels, or water the plants. Yes, it takes a little longer. Yes, it’s a little messier. But that’s where the learning happens.

Treasure these little moments. They go by so much faster than you think.

That little girl cutting carrots is now heading into her junior year of nursing school at Sacred Heart University, and I’d give just about anything to go back and watch her cut one more carrot.

The dishes can wait. The memories can’t. 🧡

Kids notice more than we realize.. and often the small things we don’t think twice about. 🧠 💭

How we talk to ourselves.
How we handle stress.
How we treat others.
How we respond when things go wrong.

They’re learning from what we do just as much as what we say.

Not perfectly. Just honestly, in everyday moments.

And that’s where so much of their understanding of the world comes from. 💞

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the incredible moms, grandmothers, stepmoms, caregivers, and mother figures in our Long Hill Montessori School community

At LHMS, we are lucky enough to witness your love light shining through your children. We see it in their kindness, confidence, independence, resilience, and the way they care for one another. The roots you are planting at home help give them the wings to grow into thoughtful, peaceful, and capable little humans.

We hope today brings you a moment to slow down, feel appreciated, and maybe even drink your coffee while it’s still hot 😜

This week reminded us once again just how lucky we are to have such an incredible team of teachers and such thoughtful, generous families.

From delicious lunches and sweet surprises to kind notes and treats, our bellies were full and our hearts were even fuller all week long. Thank you for making our teachers feel so loved and appreciated.

Our teachers give so much of themselves to the children every single day, and this week your kindness filled their cups right back up. We are beyond grateful for this beautiful community and all the love that surrounds our school.
