✨Congratulations to the late Lionel Bentley for being honored as a 2023 Oklahoma State University Ferguson College of Agriculture Distinguished Alumnus!✨

Lionel graduated with a bachelor’s degree in agronomy with a focus on turf management from OSU. He had a successful career at the City of Norman and at Bentley Turf Farms, which he owned and operated until his passing in 2022. Lionel was a great supporter of the OSU turfgrass program and was known as a turfgrass sod pioneer in Oklahoma.

Lionel’s memory will continue to be a part of the industry through the OSU Bentley Turf Center, funded by his wife Lou.

Join us in congratulating Dr. Gopal Kakani who is set to assume the interim department head position for the Oklahoma State University Department of Plant & Soil Sciences, effective January 1, 2022. Kakani has been with OSU since 2008 and previously spent two years evaluating water use efficiency of groundnuts as a research associate in the Groundnut Physiology Division at ICRISAT, Hyderabad, India.

2021 Ag Champion: Brenda Sidwell 10/27/2021

✨Congratulations to Brenda Sidwell for receiving the 2021 Oklahoma State University Agriculture Champion award! ✨

Brenda owns and operates Sidwell Insurance Agency in Goltry, Oklahoma, where she assists producers throughout Oklahoma and Kansas with crop insurance. Brenda and her late husband, Raymond, funded scholarships to support OSU’s Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, international students and study abroad opportunities in the Oklahoma State Ferguson College of Agriculture. Following Raymond’s passing, Brenda worked with the OSU Foundation to make his dream come true of updating the North Central Research Station in Lahoma, Oklahoma. The facility was named in Raymond’s memory.

“Imagine spending 10 years looking for one final piece to a puzzle, but in this case, the puzzle is made from genes in wheat.” - Brett Carver, Oklahoma State University regents professor and wheat genetics chair in agriculture.

Following more than 10 years of research, a gene discovery in an OSU developed wheat variety could mean higher yields for Oklahoma wheat producers.

“I recently joined as Post-doctoral Research Associate with Sustainable Intensification Innovation Lab (SIIL) at Kansas State University. I will be conducting research projects focused on testing different crop rotations for cropping system diversification in Southern Great Plains and lowering down greenhouse gas emissions from cover crop incorporation.”

Hardeep has a photographic memory which allows him to be very good at remembering highway and road names. He seldom uses a GPS while travelling.

The next Outstanding Senior we have the privilege of honoring is Adrienne Blakey, an Oklahoma State Ferguson College of Agriculture agricultural communications and plant and soil sciences double major from Stillwater, Oklahoma.

While at OSU, Blakey served the Student Government Association as legislative director and sustainability committee chair. She also served as vice president and community service chair of the OSU Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow. She also served Oklahoma youth as state officer and reporter of the Oklahoma FFA. Blakey was also honored as an OSU Senior of Significance, and she was recognized as the 2021 Truman Scholar, 2019 Borlaug Scholar, and 2019 OSU Homecoming Queen. She also co-developed multiple wheat varieties and published research with OSU.

Following graduation in December 2020, Blakey began her role as a fellow for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement in Washington, D.C. She hopes to eventually return to school in pursuit of a master’s degree. Great job, Adrienne!
