On this, , we sat down with Jake Pendergraft, a Mechanical Engineering major from Oklahoma City, OK, to hear about the journey that brought him to OSU.
For Jake, being more academically inclined wasn’t the only motivating factor for him to attend college after high school.
“I have cerebral palsy very mild, so that’s always kind of affected me and I’ve had to work harder," Pendergraft said.
While his family did not push him to go to college, they knew he was ready and were there to support him every step of the way.
“It’s actually the only place I applied to,” Pendergraft said. “I was from Oklahoma and I wanted to stay close enough to where I could afford it and be close to my family still.”

Meet Elva Soto, a Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering and first-generation student from Hartley, Texas.
“I just remember OSU sent me a Spanish brochure to my house for engineering,” Soto said. “That was game changing because then I didn’t have to translate anything for my parents. That was a big thing for me.”
Soto is also a leader in the F1rst2Go program, where she mentors freshman that are in the same shoes she was in during her first year at OSU.
“You are trail blazing, you are setting an example, whoever that may be for. Just go out and do what you know how to do and be the best at what you can.”
