Throughout modern US history, generational divides have deeply impacted society. Older generations often fear for the young generation. Whether it’s music, dancing, technology, fashion, or other concerns, adults have long expressed deep concerns about the choices of young people. In this interactive lecture, we’ll look at how youth culture of the 1950s became the focus of the media, lawmakers, and parents alike. Fears over what was termed ‘juvenile delinquency’ often focused on one issue in particular: drug use.
In this lecture, we’ll examine what post-World War II debates about drugs—and young people using them—tell us about broader social fears in Cold War America. We’ll also reflect on how it might have parallels with debates about youth cultures today.
