I watched the film, Steps and it made me think about how Shaquille O’Neal got involved in this project as an executive producer, until I learned he grew up in Newark, New Jersey. Steps takes place in Jersey City, New Jersey, a hop and skip from Newark. The film gives an inside look into the hard parts of Jersey City through the lens of Brian, who would be another nameless homeless figure but shows the entire story of Brian (Rob Morgan) how he became homeless and how he was rescued by a pastor (Robert G. McKay). There are not many this many character studies of homeless people while also being a Black-led film is incredible. Steps is a movie that needs to be seen to understand the homeless crisis especially in urban cities. It will be available on Apple TV and Amazon on April 20th.

During a Fall 2020 course, OSU-Tulsa graduate students explored how words and media can shape the popular perception of events through an examination of news and messages related to the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.

You can really get a sense of OSU’s dedication to the growth and support of the student-body through this page, it’s perfectly delightful! As a communications student involved in the study of films and theatre I wanted to come on and recommend a 1993 Sundance classic titled “Ruby in Paradise”. The film was featured in Roger Ebert’s top films of 1993 and Writer and Director Victor Nunez has been praised for his work on the movie. Ashley Judd stars as the young, independent woman Ruby Lee Gissing battling her internal struggles with solidarity. The film seems to be remarkably therapeutic and incorporates a wonderful selection of non-typical methods for production that act as the perfect inspiration for young media students! You can stream the full film on VOD platforms like iTunes and Amazon and find the official trailer on Quiver Distribution’s YouTube channel.

Dr. Danny Shipka lived to teach and loved nothing more than being part of the college community.
