Today's Student Spotlight is on 2020 Institutional Nominee for the Truman Scholarship, Payton Dougherty! 🎉👇
Payton is an Honors College senior from Yukon, Oklahoma, double-majoring in Political Science and Philosophy with a minor in Law and Legal Studies. Payton has served as a research assistant in the Political Science Department, and she has worked in the OSU Writing Center. She also has served on the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature, the SGA, and CAS Student Council. She has also been a Counselor for Camp Cowboy and has participated in both the Oklahoma Summer Policy Institute and the National Education for Women's Leadership Program. Fun fact: Like Blake, Payton is also a great singer!

Payton was also recently named Outstanding Senior in the Department of Philosophy! 👏🎉

Reflecting on her Truman application experience and the Writers' Workshop at the Doel Reed Center in Taos, Payton said, "Part of what made the Truman scholarship application process an excellent learning experience was that it challenged me to explore how I can best apply my education to a career in public service while also giving me the opportunity to learn about the history and culture of Taos."

Payton plans to pursue a Juris Doctorate focusing on Criminal Defense at the University of Tulsa. She hopes to serve as an advocate for the Oklahoma Policy Institute, which works to advance equitable and fiscally responsible policies through research and advocacy.

Congratulations, Payton! We are so proud of you! 👏👏

Our Story

Since 1976, the Oklahoma State University Writing Center has been the place where students, faculty, and staff come to think out loud, talk about writing, and put their thoughts on paper. The primary purpose of the Writing Center is to assist individuals in becoming well-developed and more effective writers

In one-on-one conferences, consultants help de-mystify the complex process of writing. As informed readers, consultants work with writers of all experience levels at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming and planning to final drafts. Clients are welcome to bring any type of writing, including term papers, resumes, dissertations, as well as creative pieces. Instead of simply proofreading or editing, the Writing Center will provide tools which enable clients to revise, edit, and proofread their own work.

In addition to one-on-one consultations with our trained writing consultants, the Writing Center also provides the following services free of charge to all members of the OSU community:

*English as a Second Language conversation groups to help ESL clients improve their English-speaking skills

*Writer’s Hotline (744-6671 or [email protected]) to answer quick writing questions that do not require a 50-minute consultation
