Everybody knows that setting goals is a good habit to have especially in running a business. But did you ever think of why you should set goals? Let me just give you three reasons why:
1) Focus: by setting goals you become more focused on them and you become more energized to accomplish them
2) Growth: that journey to achieving goals helps us grow personally
3) Intentional: setting goals helps us become more intentional in what we do on a daily basis

People are always wanting to know what qualities do I need to be a leader. Let me just give you a few of my "must" qualities a leader needs to have:
1) Communication: this above all else is extremely important to have. If you can't clearly communicate you can't motivate
2) Listening: unwillingness to listen is common in leaders because of the positions they hold. Don't let your position make you deaf. Listen to your people they have good things to say.
3) Positive attitude: your attitude is a choice. Don't blame others and then act upon that attitude. Remember your attitude determines how you act.
4) Personal relationships: Theodore Roosevelt said, "the most important single ingredient in the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people". Remember, you cannot be successful by yourself.
If you just have these four qualities you can do good things. Once you learn more qualities and develop them you will do great things.

As a leader, how many hours a day do you spend at your desk? I ask because the best leaders spend their time connecting with their people where they are. And they are not at your desk. They know business is all about connecting with other people, having rich meaningful conversations, showing your passion for what you do. It's been said that before people will lend you their hand to help, you need to touch their heart. When others like you and know you, they will trust you and then work hard for you. Use that open door policy to walk through your door and have the meaningful conversations that need to take place...where your people are.

A statistic came out a few years ago in the U.S. that said after graduating from high school 33% never read another book. After graduating college 42% never read another book.
How are you ever to make yourself better on the inside if you stop learning? We never stop feeding our bodies with food and we never should stop feeding our minds with knowledge.

As a leader, how do you approach problems? Do you have a negative mindset toward them? Or do you approach them as a challenge?
Problems can serve to help you think out of the box. They bring possibilities as well as help us grow ourselves and our people. They also help us grow internally and we all need that. Inside every problem comes opportunities for change and progress. If you choose to avoid problems you will not grow and there will be no progress. Someone once said that "the only people with no problems are the dead". Embrace your problems!!!!

As someone who likes to talk and teach others about leadership and being a better leader, I know full well that just me teaching them won't do much. They have to be willing to change and understand that to change the results, change needs to happen within them. A class and or seminars by themselves mean very little. Here are four reasons why people change:
1) When they hurt enough that they have to
2) When they see enough that they are inspired to
3) When they learn enough and they want to
4) When they receive enough that they are able to

As a leader, have you ever tried loving your people?
Business is about showing love to your people so they can show love to the ones they do business with. Give your people more respect and value them more than they deserve and they will do the same in their work.
Take care of your people so they can take care of those they do business with. Blow their hair back, wow them, make them want to come back and work for you. Simple idea...few get it!!

The best competitive advantage you have as a leader at your company is your leadership culture. The work performed is driven by the culture the leaders develop. It is something no one else in your industry can copy.
They may copy a product or policies, but can't copy your culture. Your culture makes your company who they are....good or bad. Your culture is what sets the standards for everyone at the company.

There are many ways to be a success at being a leader. But they all come back to going the "extra mile". Leadership can be seen when a salesman makes one more call after an exhausting day, because it's the right thing g to do. It can be seen when leaders go out if their way to get to know their peoples strengths and weaknesses to better help the company succeed. Leadership can be seen when a team continues to have each other's back in order for the job to get done right the first time. Doing extra things on that "extra mile" of road says you are no ordinary leader.
Ordinary leaders don't spend time on the "extra mile".

I was doing some reading and came across this..."Success actually breeds complacency, inefficiency and-worst of all-arrogance. When people and businesses get really successful they often fall in love with themselves. They stop innovating, working hard and taking risks and begin to rest on their laurels. They go on the defensive, spend their energy protecting their success rather than staying true to the very things that got them to the top." This is why a leader has to always be learning and growing. Once you think and believe you no longer need more knowledge, you become complacent and arrogant
