We start every single morning outside, rain or shine.
It hasn’t always been like this though….we used to start inside, do 20 minute center rotations, and 30 minutes of circle time 🙊 This was the way I thought preschool was supposed to be! I thought that we needed to have this structure in order for them to learn any academics and be ready for kindergarten. Do the academic portion, then the “extra” time goes towards unstructured free play and outdoor time. It wasn’t until I started to really look at these children- why was I putting so much pressure on these little bodies to sit still? What if perhaps, I was looking at this all wrong? What if the greatest way to set our preschoolers up for success is to provide them opportunities to move and explore, and then go inside for our structured time?
Yes, we celebrate a ton of muddy, dirty, tired kids at our preschool. And we spend HOURS outside everyday, where they are learning how to communicate, read social cues, advocate for themselves, connect with peers, explore nature, use their imaginations, and move! And when we transition inside, these kids are READY to learn and soak up everything we’re teaching them during circle time and small group time.
A lot has changed in the 6 years since we’ve started and I know we’ll continue to adapt and grow as we keep learning about these kids.
And if you’ve made it this far, this video is a glimpse of our morning set up today 🙂
