If you’ve been following this journey with Room 16, then you know making it to today has not been an easy feat.

Today, these 4th and 5th grade classes released their salmon they’ve worked so hard at raising. They spent the day outdoors on a nature walk learning about conservation and the importance of keeping our waterways clean. They were able to sit in an “outdoor classroom” made purely from trees the woods provided, and most importantly they were able to watch their hard work pay off. They also were able to eat some salmon shaped cookies and Room 16 ended their day with some time outside writing a reflection of their day.

Just a *few* bumps along the way:
•daily water changes for 3 months due to high nitrite
•chiller deciding not to work
•dead fish in the filter
•live fish trapped in the filter
….we could go on

However, these students showed the most INCREDIBLE hard work, dedication and were not going to let anything get in the way of making it to this day. Words cannot describe how proud we all are of each and every one of these students and the growth they’ve made and the knowledge they’ve gained. WAY TO GO ROOM 16!

WHAT A DAY! The biggest thank you goes out to Mr. McCartney and Capt. Jeremee Curtis for coming to Stewart Elementary to spend some time with Room 16, Ms. Bilka, and Mrs. Ayers class today. Having some great partners like the Southwest Michigan Steelheaders in our Michigan Salmon in the Classroom journey has been the best.

Thank you to all in the community who helped make it possible for all 53 students to go home with their own rod and reel! You rock 🎣

We had, yet again, ANOTHER wild time today. Somehow, the filter stopped working sometime between the end of the day yesterday and this morning. The water temp was 70 degrees and no water was being filtered. After some investigating, and some teamwork, we were able to get the warm water out and fresh colder water in. In the process was when everything began working just as before *thank goodness* these kids and salmon are quite resilient!

This past weekend, we had a bit of a scare! When changing the water, it seemed a bit warmer than usual. That’s because the chiller somehow had stopped working and the water was 59.4 degrees! It was fixed quite quickly and the water temp is back to perfect. Now…if we could just get these nitrite levels back to perfect we would be golden
