About the Program

The Central Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra (CWYSO), was founded in 2014 in partnership with UW-Stevens Point Continuing Education, UW-Stevens Point Music Department, Aber Suzuki Center, Heid Music, and regional music educators in Central Wisconsin. Two full symphony orchestras and a percussion ensemble, comprised of over 100 students from over twenty different schools/distri

cts, rehearse weekly in the state-of-the-art facilities at the Noel Fine Arts Center on the UW-Stevens Point campus. Students receive coaching from top music education majors and faculty of the UW-Stevens Point Music Department and Aber Suzuki Center. Through generous donations from the communities served, CWYSO ensures that every aspiring student may participate in the program, regardless of financial resources. The founding Music Director was Kurt Van Tiem (2014-2020). In 2022, CWYSO Philharmonia Director Stephan Wucherer was appointed the new Music Director following Mr. Van Tiem's retirement from CWYSO. Mr. Wucherer is currently the Director of String Orchestras at Stevens Point Area High School, Kennedy Elementary School, and Jefferson Elementary School. Wucherer attended UW-Oshkosh for his Bachelor's of Music in Cello Performance and went on to attend Butler University in Indianapolis for his Masters of Music. He also holds a Masters of Education from Marian University in Fond du Lac. As a performer Mr. Wucherer has a wide resume over 30 years, performing with many orchestras throughout the state including the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra, The Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra, and The Water City Chamber Orchestra and others. Wucherer also spent three years as the Director of the Waupaca Area Orchestra, giving numerous performances at the Gerold Opera House in Weyauwega. CWYSO is a program of the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra. It is led by Christian Stromley, Program Manager, and Steve Wucherer, Music Director. It is also overseen by the CWSO Board of Directors and other CWSO staff.

They have practiced for hours. They lead in their local school and youth orchestras, and dazzle in solo/ensemble competitions. They are committed to every facet of their studies. Here’s where we get to show them off! Every year, the most accomplished music students from the Central Wisconsin region are invited to compete in one or both of the CWSO or CWYSO competitions for prize money and the opportunity to perform with the CWSO or CWYSO.
