After 50 years, a time capsule has been opened with one of the original students at the time, who is our head custodian, Mr Gary. Before Point of Discovery was named Point of Discovery, it was an elementary school called Jackson Elementary, where Mr Gary previously attended as a student.
In 1971, the Jackson Elementary School opened, and in 1976, the time capsule was placed to be opened at a later date. However, in 2005, the school closed its doors, not knowing if it would reopen. Fortunately, in 2015, the building was reopened as Point of Discovery, offering a new and different learning experience. After 50 years, the staff and students of Point of Discovery finally opened the time capsule, revealing what was put inside many years before. Some items found inside consisted of old newspapers, soda cans from 1976, class photos and essays and election reports of the time. It was quite a cool experience for both students and staff!
The current plan is to spend a couple of weeks reviewing the contents and then putting them back in the vault, along with PoDS 2026 additions, to be opened in another 50 years!
