School districts from across Wisconsin were on campus Friday with one goal: Hire Pointers. The Education Job Fair connected more than 100 UWSP students with recruiters (including many alumni) from more than 50 districts, giving future educators the opportunity to explore openings, build connections and take the next step toward careers in the classroom.

Future educators got an inside look at the tools that help give every student a voice. Students in EDUC 351 - Educating Students with Special or Other Needs in the General Education Environment, explored low-, mid- and high-tech communication and access devices in the Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Lab of the UWSP Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic.

The experience was organized through a collaboration between one of our newest faculty members Sharon Redmon, Ph.D., and Megan Arney, Ph.D., from UW-Stevens Point Communication Sciences and Disorders, giving special education students a firsthand look at technology that can support individuals with speech and language impairments. 

The visit also sparked conversations about how general and special education teachers can work alongside speech-language pathologists to help students who use aided communication access learning opportunities and achieve their IEP goals.

Little hands were busy mixing, measuring and molding during another hands-on day in the Gesell Institute. Children from UCLCC made pudding and explored their creativity with Play-Doh while building fine motor skills, sensory awareness and early learning concepts through play.

It's one of many hands-on lesson being developed throughout the semester by students in ECE 368 - Creative Integrated Curriculum and Methods for Young Children with Assistant Professor Sarah Beaulieu.

Inspired by Amelia Earhart, students took flight as they led peer teaching sessions on Tuesday. Using informational texts, they guided classmates through creating dream flight plans while building their skills in teaching for deep comprehension in EDUC 324 - Techniques in Elementary School: Social Studies with Prof. Amber Garbe.
