This photo of the groundbreaking of the Collins Classroom Center in 1965 is a classic case of differential light fading and photo contact transfer. On display in indirect light for decades, the previously purple mounting paper faded to a dull tan. More notably, the still-purple paper that was covered by the photo gradually took on a copy of the original photo, creating a sort of ultra slow process photogram.

Yesterday, Instruction and Digital Archivist Kyle Neill hosted Prof. Barske’s Historical Thinking class as the first group in our new instruction space in the SRC.

Where we once could accommodate around 20 students for archival instruction, we welcomed two classes of 40 students each—an exciting step forward in expanding access to hands-on learning with primary sources.

We’re thrilled to see more students engaging directly with archival materials in this new space, and we look forward to many more classes to come!

🌟 Shoutout to our Archives team! 🌟

We’re so proud of our Assistant Archivist, Shane, for the care and professionalism he brings to researchers every day. A recent visitor shared:

“Thank you for the hospitality and professionalism extended to me today. The materials were exactly what I needed for my research, and I greatly appreciate the time taken in advance to have them ready upon my entrance to the archives. It was a great experience, and I just wanted to extend my thanks again. Much appreciated.”

Thank you, Shane—and the entire Archives team—for making our archives such a welcoming and valuable resource for all who use it!

Our Archives team has been safety trained for unrestricted access to the new Library and Student Resources Center while we prepare our new space for the upcoming collections move.

We figured we'd give you a quick tour while we're in here!

The library had the opportunity to tour the new Library and Student Resource Center building last week. We were excited to see how our new spaces are coming along.

A highlight for Archives: Our collection storage room has its own dedicated HVAC. Our collection preservation ability will be greatly boosted with direct control over our collection environment's temperature and relative humidity.
