Third grade had a great day at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh! 🌹🌸🌺🌷🌻The students loved exploring all the different rooms filled with flowers, plants, trees and even some wildlife! 🌴🦋🐝🐜🕷️Students enjoyed the hands on class “The Buzz About Pollinators” where they learned all about pollination! 🌹🪻🌸🌺🌷🌻

To conclude our month-long study of disabilities, our second grade students welcomed a visit from the Society for Equal Access: Kids on the Block. Students enjoyed an interactive puppet show and learned about the daily lives of children with disabilities.

Pugliese West Elementary School is a great place for learning! What makes West special is our staff's continued effort to create, foster and maintain a safe, nurturing learning community involving students, staff, parents and the community. Our goal, as a total staff, is to make Pugliese West Elementary an enjoyable place to work and learn, as well as a school recognized for excellence in the areas of academics and citizenship.
Pugliese West follows the Steubenville City Schools board approved curriculum incorporating the Common Core Standards and the Ohio Learning Standards. "Success For All" is the board-approved curriculum for Reading and Math in the district. West also houses an interactive Lego Lab where students are empowered to turn their natural curiosity into creative exploration and creation.
Pugliese West Elementary is committed to bringing Project Based Learning experiences to all of our students at every grade level. We believe that children learn best from authentic experiences and hands on activities that promote critical thinking and cooperative learning.
School Garden: With help from the Ohio State University Extension’s master gardeners, students have created an outdoor vegetable garden and pumpkin patch. From seeds to the table, students have planted, maintained and harvested foods from the school garden. The educational opportunities for learning are limitless with our school garden!
Community Exhibit: Students research and explore the city of Steubenville in this unique educational experience. From touring historical sites to interviewing government officials and citizens, students become fascinated by the history and potential future of the town. The projects end with an exhibit that is open to the public.
Friendship Project: Students learn what it means to be kind and compassionate in this amazing project of love. Students have partnered with students from the Jefferson County School of Bright Promise. Using the fictional novel Wonder by R.J Palacio as the inspiration, students are paired with “buddies” who have physical or mental disabilities. In this project, students not only learn about a students disability, but they get to know the child behind the disability.
SeaPerch: Is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in an educational setting. Students involved in SeaPerch learn basic science and engineering concepts and tool safety and technical procedures. Students create a prototype prior to developing their working ROV. This project ends at a presentation at the SHS Natatorium.
Growth Mind Set: When students first come to understand that learning can rewire the brain and increase their intelligence, they often become more interested in learning and less afraid to do things that might make them “look dumb.” In other words, they develop a growth mindset. ... Growth mindset is about growth, not just about effort. In this literature based project students read fairytales and then create a project that promotes critical thinking, creativity and cooperative learning.
Parental Involvement: Is always encouraged! Our parents volunteer in a number of different ways during and after school. Whether its volunteering to work for 30 minutes at our farmer’s market, assisting with a STEM project or afterschool club, our parents are an important part of the educational experience for our students.
Accolaids: Pugliese West has been recognized by the Ohio Department of Education for outstanding pedagogical achievement and was rated as one of the top elementary schools in the state! Pugliese West Elementary was awarded every award available from ODE, including the All-A’s, School of Promise and High Performing awards for three consecutive years, along with the High Progress and Momentum awards. Although we are honored to be recognized we realize that we can not be successful with our students on our own. It takes a community to educate the whole child! We are always working to find ways to work with our school stakeholders. We are grateful to have parents, a school board and administrative staff that supports what we do at Pugliese West Elementary.
